HTC Vive Consumer Version - ED launch & setup - Help!

All,

I've been using my DK2 up to now and it is all smooth and with SS set to 2.0, the detail isn't bad either (everything is set to Ultra/high where possible).

I was expecting the Vive to be better but here is what I've found....

1. The image quality is terrible. It is like watching it under water (especially near lights) and the frame lag is unplayable. I've tried everything from reseting the Nvidia settings to defaults, setting the ED GFX options to low. Makes no difference.
2. It always opens in Windowed mode and is locked to 60Hz (isn't it supposed to be 90?)

I've come to the conclusion I must be doing something wrong. How are you supposed to launch ED properly (I just use the ED launcher as normal - tried launching it within SteamVR Desktop mode but it made no differnce) and configure ED for the Vive properly?

Have we all bought a £600 lemon?

P.S. Yes I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers (364.72 to date) and I think the Vive is setup correctly as the Vive apps and other VR apps on Steam seems to be perfectly fine.

A new update for Steam VR just came out, have you tried it with that yet?

Some people with various configurations of Steam VR, Graphics Drivers and such have had no issues with Elite and some are having no luck.

I personally can't help much because I don't have access to a HMD of any sort at the moment.

I can say this though, you haven't got a £600 lemon (how did you find it for £600 BTW I'd love that deal!) software side should be sorted Soon TM...

Let's hope so. For now I'll be sticking with the DK2. I also have the Oculus CV1 on order and due to arrive next month sometime. Whichever one gives me the best experience over the DK2 for Elite is the one I'll keep. The loser will be eBayed!

I have had exactly the same experience. Tried playing on a friends DK2 and so was really looking forward to playing on the Vive. Sadly when it arrived a few weeks ago Elite was terrible. All the problems you described above, I simply can't get it to play or look even remotely decent. My rig runs it at 4K normally so I was hoping for better.

I tried it again today and it is still dreadful, tried lots of settings with no luck.

Yes, the image quality in ED is awful. No, you're not doing anything wrong.

Hi I've only just got my Vive working (driver problems initially), however I can now get through the tutorial and get to the main Vive menu.

I had a read through https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/commen...king_with_the/ and it said find the "3D display option". I assume that's the 3D option under Display submenu. All I get is OFF / Anaglyph / Side By Side, not the headset described. This is the same in both ED Horizons Engineers beta 2.1 and the current ED 64bit.

Should I be running ED from the Vive menu or something rather than from my usual desktop?

You are looking in the correct place. Its sometimes a bit fiddly. Try a reboot etc maybe with the unit disconnected. If running via steam enable VR. If running from launcher it will auto detect (after some reboots hopefully)
Oh forgot the first time you run it you may need to have steam VR enabled.

The resolution, refresh rate and windowed/full settings in ED's graphics options only apply to the mirrored view on the regular screen, hence you're only getting the 60 hz option (assuming you have a 60 hz screen).

Other than that, you don't seem to do anything wrong.

I expected a better increase in image quality compared to the DK2 and it leaves a lot to be desired, but it definitely looks better than on the DK2 and I don't experience noticeable frame lag using a single GTX 980.

Seeing as the in-cockpit text is noticeably clearer with the Vive over DK2 for me... I can't see the issue.

On the main menu screen looking at the SRV and ship in hanger... that looks jagged but then I'm not able to use AA since I'm on steamvr and Vive are demanding for 970.

I've had to reduce the graphics to VR Low preset to make ED at all playable. Tried the Engineers beta and it did seem to be a bit smoother with the Vive! Or perhaps it was my GPU overclock? More testing needed.
