HTC Vive Pricing Announced.

Wow, OR CR1 orders must have been really low for this price point to happen, HTC is seriously losing money at $799...ouch.

If they are smart, I suspect they are breaking even at that price point. We haven't seen their shipping and handling charges yet. They could claw back a few buck on that alone.

What's the resolution and framerate on this thing? price seems like a lot. more expensive than the rift for the UK.

as above, wow

You need to achieve 90fps like the CV1. 2160 x 1200 total resolution. I can't wait for the new GPU's to roll out, 980TI on ultra will just about keep 75fps on ultra in VR (DK2 Horizons)

Much cheaper.... er, I mean, less costly than I anticipated.
It won't be easy to avoid buying it at this price tag.

That's about $400 more than I'm willing to pay for VR.

Basically two tiny monitors with some lenses and head strap. The early adopter pricing with either degrade like IPS prices did, or the market will stay so niche that it won't be developed for by other publishers.

ED is a safe zone though. But $800 VR + a $700 card?? Plus $300 for controllers and another $1000 at least for your base PC. Tack on the lifetime pass out upgrade fees and playing ED is like buying a RL car.

I've already dropped about $1000 just on stuff related to only to this game.

Aye ditto, not paying that.

Want VR but at that price I'll wait for the tech to evolve, 1st iteration is usually transitory.

My Tobii EyeX does the job for now.

Vive has headset, 2 controllers and those sensors you can mount on walls. Right? Then 799 isn´t bad. Probably going to get this over oculus as controllers aren´t included in that 599 price and no release time for those.

Losing money? haven't found any place they've written that, that said I personally would have thought Valve would have helped with the price, they have more then enough money to be able to sell units at a loss to get vr established.

That or maybe steam is going to work on some subsidizing? Payment plans or similar, of similar nature to phones and such?

OR is losing money at it's price point of $599, they stated that, and the HTC setup has more hardware on the HMD itself, not to mention the controllers and the extra sensor(2 as opposed to the 1 that comes with the OR setup), so they are definitely taking a loss at this price point.

That said, they CAN afford to take a loss, it's HTC and Valve doing this after all, so eating the loss to get more of them out is in their best interest, smart business move, and I'm sure it'll pay out well since many people held out on the OR CR1 to see what HTC was going to price the Vive at. $200 more for a frontface 'ghost' camera(which after seeing it in action, VERY cool!), controllers AND 2 sensors, definitely worth the price compared to the OR CV1.

Same resolution in both HMDs, so for the price, HTC is offering the better value all around, that should make it pay off in the long run, and that's what they are looking at, same as OC, long term, not short term, these are the FIRST consumer versions after all...so whoever gets the most people using THEIR system now has the lion's share of the market down the road.

Welp, guess I won't be playing in VR any time soon.

Really do need to finish my certs and find a job that pays me what I'm worth.

And a multitude of sensors and the two tiny monitors are good quality OLED and the lenses are high quality optics and there's laser equipped base stations and hand controllers and two games and a cellphone costs the same and that only has ONE 'tiny monitor' ...

It's not so much the cost, it's the "upgrade level" from the DK2 I'm concerned about. Is it really $800 of "better"? I'll wait until I can try one out, or at least hear from those who have tried one.

Exactly. These things have lots of technology inside.

I would like to know the price for Germany and if a system consisting of a GTX 980TI and a 5820K may be sufficent to run ED with.

That you can already check out, there's a few reviews of the final device and they all say the same thing, the OR CV1 and HTC Vive are better than the DK2 by more than a little bit. I'm thinking the Vive is the better choice at this price point, I just need to add the cost of at least a single 980 Ti to it since my 750 ain't gonna cut it :)

3D headsets from 90' had a lot of technology in them too (still remember how mindblowing playing Hexen was on that thing) and they died horrible death because of pricing.
It took 20 years for Oculus to re-invent it with hope to make it affordable and then consumer oculus costs twice as much as prototype - yeah, I know, beter display blablabla better technology blablabla...
I really hope 3d will take off, even at that price point, and will make it affordable for more people, driving it even further, but I am afraid history will repeat itself and it will become niche market and die again because of high entry cost.
Interesting to see what will happen.
