Losing money? haven't found any place they've written that, that said I personally would have thought Valve would have helped with the price, they have more then enough money to be able to sell units at a loss to get vr established.
That or maybe steam is going to work on some subsidizing? Payment plans or similar, of similar nature to phones and such?
OR is losing money at it's price point of $599, they stated that, and the HTC setup has more hardware on the HMD itself, not to mention the controllers and the extra sensor(2 as opposed to the 1 that comes with the OR setup), so they are definitely taking a loss at this price point.
That said, they CAN afford to take a loss, it's HTC and Valve doing this after all, so eating the loss to get more of them out is in their best interest, smart business move, and I'm sure it'll pay out well since many people held out on the OR CR1 to see what HTC was going to price the Vive at. $200 more for a frontface 'ghost' camera(which after seeing it in action, VERY cool!), controllers AND 2 sensors, definitely worth the price compared to the OR CV1.
Same resolution in both HMDs, so for the price, HTC is offering the better value all around, that should make it pay off in the long run, and that's what they are looking at, same as OC, long term, not short term, these are the FIRST consumer versions after all...so whoever gets the most people using THEIR system now has the lion's share of the market down the road.
