Newcomer / Intro HUD background opacity

I've only just noticed this over the past day or so, but for some reason the background for my ship's HUD has become almost entirely transparent, enough that it becomes difficult to read in bright environments. I've searched through the options but I cannot find an option that looks like it would make the backgrounds more opaque. It's especially noticeable and irritating with the four main panels. Is there any way of fixing this?

There's a brightness slider for the UI panels (right panel->ship->pilot preferences->interface brightness), but I'm not aware of a way to adjust background opacity.
The only other explanation I can think of is that a graphics driver update broke stuff, or changing some other graphics setting accidentally influences the opacity.

I don't know whether you get a correct result if you switch on the standard mode in EDHM. I don't know how EDHM does it.
It would be better to uninstall it. But I think many CMDR do not use EDHM and therefore have the original cockpit view.
I had hoped that a few of these CMDRs would come forward and say "they have that too" or "they don't have that".
By the way, even if it had to do with EDMH, I wouldn't want to do without the tool. (y):)
