HUD/UI Variation

Ok, so we have the option to change the HUD colour by altering the Graphics Configuration Override file. However, in a sense, it is limited because we can't change the colours of individual elements. For example, being able to keep allies green and enemies red no matter what colour the main UI is. Also, a lot of colour schemes change the appearance of avatars dramatically.

Do you think actual in-game HUD/UI customisation, is something you'd like to see/something we could get?

Personally, it's a feature I'd like implemented, and I'm curious to what the community thinks since I do see a lot of people that change their colour schemes, and I have even seen others that say they would love to but don't because of how you can't alter the colours of individual elements.

Also, I think the idea of different HUD types for each ship manufacturer (or each ship, or just the choice of installing different ones) would be a great feature. Core Dynamics could be very militaristic while Gutamaya could have a sleek and high tech feel, for example, which would suit the aesthetics of the cockpits so much better than the current one.

Different HUD types are probably not going to happen (I hope they do), but I think it would add a lot of diversity and some needed variation. And to be honest, I don't see a problem with it.

Thoughts?

Welcome to what must be the most requested feature to date, HUD colour change. It would indeed be super.

Why is it apparently so hard to separate the HUD elements to color them individually? This seems like such an easy and simple change and we're all still waiting.

This must be close to the top of most players wish list. I along with many were asking for this way back in original beta.

I may even be prepared to forgo a hula girl/boy bobblehead to get this... ...maybe...

Who knows, I don't think they've ever talked about it and we don't even know if it's on their list of things to do. I hope it is but....you just don't know with FD haha

I have to use the config file to wind down the orange. Otherwise I feel it blinds the whole view .....and my eyes. [blah][haha]

Been asking for this for years. NEVER gonna happen.

FD have written it Into the lore that all ship HUDs are the same for usability and familiarity.

Total cop out if you ask me, just a way to cut a corner.

The ships should have their own HUDs since we are stuck sat in our seats looking at the same panels 100% of the time we are in the game.

They have actually talked about it. They'd have to do a complete rewrite of the UI to allow it, as it was never designed to be anything other than it is, so there are no options to individually alter just parts of the UI coloring. That's why the config file hacks alter everything, rather than just specific elements.

Whether they're ever going to do something with it is anyone's guess. They might surprise us by making it part of the 'core' updates they're working on, but I'm not betting the farm on it just yet.

Frontier have talked about this specific issue, but it was a while back, and it seems that allowing the level of control we would like is far more difficult than we would think. Often the case in IT.

I seem to remember that this ability is on their 'list', but then so are space legs, and they are a long long way off.

Didn't know they'd talked about, I probably wasn't about when they did.

Maybe they will surprise us, there's still a lot about Beyond that we don't know about, but I won't hold my breath.

And I've got a feeling space legs are closer than everyone makes out, watching the future of Elite Dangerous vid from a couple of years ago and almost every Dev questioned said space legs is what they're looking forward to most. We even saw a commander out of the chair and putting his arm on the seat in the PS4 trailer, which could just be for trailer purposes, but I think it's a little hint that space legs aren't as far away as people believe. I could be wrong, only time will tell!

I have a blue and gold HUD which I have tweaked to be exactly what I wanted... apart from the fact enemies are dark blue rather than red.

I am another who would really appreciate the ability to change or lock individual HUD elements to a set colour.

This here is a list of compatible colours ;)

And yes, i hope we will get in near future the possibility to adjust different elements of the HUD in the color that we like :)
For me this would be one of those "improvements to core gameplay"

I'm rocking Cyan - Deep Sky Blue atm, seems to compliment space more....haha

But having the option to keep enemies red among many other things (like keeping the FSD charge countdown red etc and sheilds offline UI red...) would be great. And yeah, would be a core improvement, I agree.

which ever company conned all ship manufactures to standardise the cockpit displays must be laughing, planking on a pile of credits

Yep and it shows how great their forward thinking and planning is. Instils so much faith into the whole "10 year plan" thing doesn`t it?

This and other parts of the game are pretty poor. Seems like a cop out that each ship model doesn't have its own unique HUD display.

This game still needs a lot of work even after 3 years. Been playing since Beta on PC and now moved to PS4 but I'm already starting to struggle to find the motivation to carry on playing.

The so called 'narrative' is so poorly implemented, and the mundane Community Goals are severely lacking in quality and variation.

I really hope the next 12 months give the game a huge improvement, but if I'm honest I don't hold out much hope.

My concern is that the Cobra engine isn't up to scratch and is ultimately holding the game back.

I hope I'm wrong. If exploration is really fleshed out then I could see me sinking many many more hours into ED. Fingers crossed.

It's not exactly a show-stopper but you would have thought the first time somebody play-tested ED and jumped into a system with their ship (and HUD) pointing at a star, the first comment should have been "Is yellow the best colour for the HUD, given that most stars are different shades of yellow too?"

It's almost impossible to believe that nobody noticed this or commented on it, which kind of makes me think FDev deliberately chose to make it a colour that's hard to see at times.

And then they invented Horizons and provided us with navigational information displayed as tiny little digits in the corner of the HUD, also in yellow, superimposed over the planets which are also usually a yellowish (beige) colour.

It's got to be deliberate sadism on the part of the dev's, IMO, which might explain why they're reluctant to change it. [where is it]
