Hue light bulbs...

As I was fuel scooping last night I was thinking how great it would be if my hue light bulbs could take the color of the star, then the color of the cockpit display when flying in space, then the color of the station when docking inside or remaining the color of the cockpit if docking outside on an outpost. If someone has the know how to scrape your location from the game and create an IFTTT to the hue lights please feel free to run with this idea!
 
I tried messing around with an infrared controller and an RGB LED light, it was simply going to be a huge hassle so I ended up buying gaming lights instead.

They are horribly expensive for what they are, and a huge pain in the backside to get set up properly, but once they are running they are spectacular.

I've had friends literally go WOW! as starlight sweeps across the wall and matches the screen, and the blue bands of frame shift make the walls glow cyan.

Expensive though.

Philips have an SDK for their lighting products and are looking to break into the gaming market to provide more immersive gaming.

Not sure the misses is going to appreciate the lighting switching every time I arrive at a new star mind.

I have it, it is looking super great, especially when you are in hyperspace.

It has API so you can controll it via scripts and it also can read color from screen.

The gaming lights use AMBX to pull colour data from DirectX - once you've enabled it for an application. The only downside is the wiring needed - power and USB hubs all over the place :)

They also conflict with TrackIR to cause high CPU use, but all in all it's worth it for me.
 
Ok I've made a video and link will be up soon - very mixed results.

My gopro simply sucks in low-light, and as the gaming lights are USB and LED there's a lot of strobing, colours are washed out, and having the silly thing taped to my headset lead to all sorts of fun weight slippage :D



Anyway - I flew around a bit, tried to show the effect off, and got interdicted blown up by a Dropship for giggles. You can get the general idea of the experience - the effect is much more impressive in real life though. If anyone wants, I can ditch the headset and try to set the gopro to better low-light settings and see if I can do something a bit more impressive.
