Huge battles please

With Powerplay I thought now we can finally see huge battles. But no. The battles didn't change, still no multiple capital ship fights and combat zones are still small.

As well as this, battles are always going to be small when the instancing means you can only see a maximum of 32 ships. Hardly makes for an 'epic' space battle.

I'm sure there will be in the future, but first a actual war needs to break out.
Now its still mostly backroom politics.. no need to bring out the big guns yet.

And about the size of battles.... Might only be 32 ppl in a instance, but those are players... don't forget the NPC's ;)

Yeah massive epic battles with hundreds of ships would look nice but imagine the clutter on your scanner. Then there would be even more endless threads about NPC ramming, friendly fire and kill stealing.

Not to mention you come out of that epic warzone and see about 3 ships in supercruise and a similar amount on reaching a nearby station! Would kind of kill the moment!

holy crap, I never realized this. 32 players?!?!?! really?!??! jesus, even SW online had battles with well over a hundred players... this is pretty pathetic.

So how would you fit eveyone into a station if you had hundreds of players around you? You have to have a limit there for practicality but i dare say they will eventually increase the limits for other areas.

Whilst I'm amazed you hadn't picked this up before the reality is that I doubt if anyone has seen 20 in one instance - most I've ever seen was about 12.

But this isn't news, sorry.

As I understand it this is because of the p2p nature of the netcode. If everything is run by the server like most online games you can just attach a big fat internet pipe to the server. In ED much of the networking is run by the players so your limit is what the players pipes are. It wouldn't be a problem if everybody had fast fibre but if the fastest connection in your island is a 2mb ADSL you can't manage an instance of hundreds of players.

ED can't run like most online games. Most of them have zone servers that run individual maps and have maybe 30 maps. The ED universe is far too big for that kind of model as you would need thousands of servers to run 400 billion systems and the majority of them would spend most of their time doing nothing as there are few to no players in most of the systems.

I think you totally missed the point to Elite. Its not a shooter as such. Big battles are not the crux of the game unless it fits the story line. This is not Eve or Star Trek. You will get big battles eventually but only when the politics of the game call for it (war is declared/feds vs empire etc). Power play does not mean that everyone goes to war straight away. Of course there is nothing stopping you deliberately stirring trouble up in factions to help it along a bit :D

Frontier just need to make dedicated zones to allow 8 or 12 player wings etc but keep 4 player wings to normal space.
