Huge dark asteroid belt?

Anyone ever run across one of those, before?

I am out in COL 359 Sector SY-D and was exploring a pretty large system, then somehow got out into the middle of nowhere (and I mean "middle of nowhere" in a star system in "middle of nowhere") and kept dropping out of SC. I took massive hull damage because I couldn't see but there was a giant asteroid belt/planetary ring between me and all the other system objects. I was so far out from the light of the sun that it was black on black and the planet with the ring was just a tiny spot; impossible to navigate.

It took me a while to realize what was going on by which point I had lost 10% of my hull.

Because I'm in a sector near the edge of one of the spiral arms, there weren't a lot of choices to jump for in the direction away from the planetary ring. So I spent 20 minutes trying every possible jump point from where I was and looking for one off the plane of the ecliptic. I was, literally, starting to panic! I've come a long way and I don't want to die out here, unknown and unlamented, leaving my ship like an empty shell for some other discoverer, someday, to find. Finally, I found one that looked like a decent chance, and started my jump, angling away from the rocks. Made it!!!

At what point do other explorers turn around and head for civilization? The plastic bits on my cobra's dashboard melted enough to begin to droop like wilted lettuce and the whole cockpit reeks of hot metal and unwashed armpit.

Tasty! Wilted lettuce and Odor de Armpit!

So I guess the ship lights were not powerful enough?

I've been in black hole systems but the light from the core helps. Even though the planet is black

Heya Nutter!! Thanks for your helpful explorer's guides. You're my hero! Can I blame you for my being out here in the middle of the middle of the edge of noplace? Because if I die out here I want someone to curse with my last breath.

Ships lights not enough. I mean this was a huuuuuuuuge planetary ring or something - my entire field of view was rocks in all directions. After I flew for a while I got out of it but then it was still between me and the plane of the ecliptic so there was nothing I could lock to supercruise to. Seriously, I was thinking about just flying and flying and maybe tying one of my shoestrings around the boost button and another around my neck.

I went back and got a view from the other side with the lens of the galaxy backlit. It's a huge ring.

I know it's got to be orbiting something but there's no planet I can see. Heck of a nice trap to fly into at high speed.

"Explore the universe" they said.
"Fame and fortune and fans" they said.

They didn't mention how black it gets out between the spiral arms.

That's tricky. But here is a tip. You want to get out, so select a jump destination and then enable FSD but keep throttle at zero. When your FSD it ready, just whack your throttle to max. You should make the jump without moving much and bumping into anything.

That never occurred to me!!! Thank you for the potential life-saver!

Something similar happened to me on the weekend- i went to jump to another system, and engaged FSD.. shortly after the 5,4,3,2,1 engage i dropped out with a bang and "Dropping too close" message. Right there in front of me was a huge cloud of something- i am not sure what as i did not try to fly close to it. From a distance it looked like a huge spherical cloud of asteroids. Weirdest thing i have sever come across in the game. I took a screen shot and will post it when i get home.

Whoa, that's a huge belt.

I haven't seen anything quite like that, but have got caught out in a belt around a gas giant before, where the bulk of the belt could be seen close to the body, but it actually went out far far further and was almost invisible (almost seemed like a secondary set of rings far far out). I couldn't see it, and before I had a chance to figure out why my Prox sensor is going off I had dropped out of SC. Looked a bit like your pic too - very hard to see.

You can set a keybind to enter supercruise, you don't need to lock onto anything.

Or did I read this wrong?

As promised earlier, here is a pic of the very large cloud of something that dropped me out of a between system jump just after countdown completed.. i wish i had examined it closer..

Definitely this. Took me a while to find this out but you can enter supercrise using a key binding, without having to lock on to a destination. Very good for leaving RES'.

Mesolithic.
