Huge gap in ship price

I find it strange there is a huge gap in the price between some ship....

For example is from Asp Ex to Python, both is multipurpose ship but asp being 6 mil while python being 56 mil.

While there are 2 other same class ship priced at 22 mil and 14 mil, they are locked behind navy ranks.

Same can be said for vulture to FDL.

Why is there such a big gap?

Larger, more capable ships cost more than smaller, less capable (relatively speaking) ships.

The AspX is an absolute steal for what it can do though.

The Asp Explorer is manufactured by Lakon Spaceways while the Python is manufactured by Faulcon deLacy. That should explain the price gap right there.

I can buy an Audi A4 for just over $36,000. It's in the same vehicle class as a Toyota Camry which sells for $23,000. Another comparable vehicle, the BMW 5, sells for over $51,000. Yes ... each has different options but they seat about the same number of passengers and have around the same trunk capacity. The BMW and the Toyota get around the same gas mileage with the Audi A4 winning on that front. Still ... in all the ways that really count all three vehicles are very similar. Why the price gap?

If you really think that the Asp Ex and the Python are equal ... just buy the Asp and count your savings ... like I did when I picked which car to buy. After pricing the BMW 5, Audi A4 and the Toyota Camry ... I opted for the even cheaper Toyota Corolla at 18,500. I guess that's the equivalent to buying an Asp Scout instead of the Asp Explorer :)

The elite counterpart of the toyota corolla in your comparison may as well be the sidewinder without the life support systems.

The racing game equivalent is like finding out the next car in line after the Skyline GTR R34 is the la ferrari

Looking at your prices, those are a STEAL if they're the prices in Singapore. Only $18,500 for a Toyota Corolla? Damn. I could buy 2 (or 3) of those with what we pay for a typical car in Singapore.

Perhaps in the future FD might insert another ship in the gap?
Perhaps a cheaper Lakon competitor for the Python in that medium pad niche.

As far as the difference in price between Python and AspX is concerned... When you own a Python you will understand :). There really is no comparison between the two.

Vulture and FDL same thing. The FDL is marketed as a powerful luxury combat ship. It even has a class 4 weapon mount, which is a big deal.
The Vulture is a more bare bones, but very capable combat ship. I love my Vulture, but when I bought the FDL I was so pleasantly surprised by the way it felt and handled. And those thrusters are so sexy :).

You see the same kind of price differences in real life between cars.
So this mimics real life.

as someone who owns both. the only advantage i see in the asp is jump range. the python as far as a multiclass has a lot more going on and is bigger by far hence the price gap. we are talking about space ships

Yes, the big gap there should have been filled with the fed/imp ships but they wanted to stick ranks in the game...so you have to haul poop/slaves around until they let you haul poop/slaves for the navy and then you can buy the ships you want and stop giving a f*#k.

And that's...the way the news goes.

they should fill in the gap, in World of Tanks is like buying a T-34 med tank to only find out that the next tank in the tech tree is the IS-7

Same in Norway. Can't even get a base model Toyota Aygo for $18,500. [blah]

Well, to beat a dead horse some more, FD wanted to force players out of their comfort zone with a lot of horizons. The engineers force you to use the SRV, explore, mine, fight, trade etc. and it's usually either a fun surprise to find an activity you like and never would have tried otherwise or a terrible grind. To each his own.

The rank grind however is the same missions for the same factions with an occasional one tagged "for navy" thrown in. It has nothing to do with PP, loyalties to preffered superpower or anything meaningful. I guess there was some sort of game worthy idea somewhere that got dropped due to time.

So, to nudge a completely derailed rant back on topic - there are ships filling the gap, but they are locked behind a completely arbitrary and pointless system.

Funny how no one mentioned the T-7 with 17mil as a gap closer.
When resetting my save mid-may my ship progression went like that:

Sidewinder -> Adder -> Cobra MkIII -> T-6 -> AspX -> T-7 -> FdL -> Anaconda -> Cutter

Sidewinder to adder was faster than I'd like to. Just grab a few bounties.
Adder to Cobra didn't take much longer, purely mission running in sirius corp systems to prepare for engineers and get those modules.
Cobra continued to do mission running, getting allied to a few systems meanwhile.
T-6 was good for a few rare trade route runs which brought in cash for a fully upgraded AspX pretty quick.
Continued a mix of rare trade routes and mission running with the AspX, then switched to imp slave and boom state (6kcr/ton) trading with the T-7.
Getting the anaconda took a bit longer but nothing too bad, that was roughly 3 weeks after the reset, mind you.
With the anaconda equipped for long range passenger missions I could grab 3-4 missions that had the same destination and a range of 5kly+, paying distance x 3 as a reward.
This results usually in a mission payout of 16-20mil each mission, along with exploration honk payout of 15-20mil. Trip like that take the better part of an afternoon to complete.

Gameplay wise the ship progression was rather smooth, though I could welcome a price increase for every ship after the eagle and before the T-7, considering how easy it is to make money in the games current state, there's no need to use any exploits unless you absolutely want to sit in an anaconda within 24 hours.

I don't think car comparisons work though. Find some examples with planes or ships.

Car prices work because they are easy to relate to. The average consumer doesn't typically purchase a plane or ship. Ships (at least military ships) aren't produced in mass quantities the way that they appear to be in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Heck, I've even seen Outposts that have what appear to be "showroom floors" in them like when you visit a car dealership.
