So, after spending some time helping my FPS gamer friend get his controls set for ED today, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to give mouse & keyboard another go myself.

Crucially though, I'm also using VoiceAttack with an HCS Voice Pack.

Turns out, I fly pretty well with M&K when using HCS.

I might actually stick with this for a while. Want to see how I perform in PvP piracy with this setup.

I still have to learn how to use the mouse, on my laptop. Having it to do stuff, would be very helpful.

.

mouse is easy mode, hence why a lot of PvP'ers use it, aiming is a breeze.

Thing is, you can actually configure both HOTAS and K&M to work together.. I just.. flying with a mouse... if I'm going to do that, I'll play NMS.

While i've done it for many games, every space game without the joystick has a subconscious gutting of the experience. The joystick holds it up somehow i think.

Having said i should probably give it a go, because all the space games in the past that have permitted mouse controls have had not that much substance anyway, or i found after elite (x games sad casualty).

I actually think this would be the perfect solution for me. I like KBAM, but the hotkeys are getting to be a bit much, especially with all the new features. I'm sometimes starting to have to use alt/shft/ctrl combos and that way lies madness.

It's worth it.

Yeah flying M&K is much easier when you can just voice in actions.

I recently switched to a game mouse with 12 buttons on the side. Now I can switch targets, toggle firegroups, pip management, plus the standard mouse actions. There's other stuff I can add but need to increase my thumb dexterity a few more points.

I am on a laptop, and because I play often when commuting I use keyboard only (no space for a mouse). I must say it works quite well using the arrow keys for pitch and roll. For PVE, that is, never tried PVP (in that case I'm toast probably).

I use Kb for roll. I don't think pitch would be that big a deal either (arrow keys?), but its the aiming I'm curious about. What do you aim with just Kb?

See I have some vouchers and am considering a similar mouse now.

Keyboard-only sounds like the most Star Trek-like interface method as well.

Still trying to figure this gaming mouse out. It's a 6 button Logitech. I use the mouse when at Starport Services and when I'm in the SRV for aiming the guns. I'm thinking I'll work with it some more and just do all or most of the SRV stuff with it.

I'll be joining this gaming mouse movement too, as of today. It's time to throw the old Warthog HOTAS to garbage. Honestly, no salt, simply serenity and clarity of thought. Maybe some impending neck pains too. My Gunship is finally going to get the time and attention she needs. Now where do you put all the thrusters...

This game has always been keyboard, then mouse/keyboard and later joystick friendly. Frontier never forgot that. One of the best in the 90s was was the Wico. USB didn't exist then needing a serial port.

Play ED on the PC with the latest greatest HOTAS, advanced game pads, gaming chairs etc costing a lot of real money.

Purchase a second PC account (currently $14.40 for the holiday sale CMDR deluxe version at the store) and play only with the mouse and keyboard. Take the time to get proficient with it and you'll wonder why you paid so much money for all that other stuff.

Regards

I don't get the whole KMB thing. Are the advantages really that noticeable?

I tried KMB for close to a month and never felt like I was coming close to where I was at with my HOTAS.

One of the reasons I struggle to enjoy SC and prefer ED, is the flight model with HOTAS sucks in SC.

As my only input into PvP is to get away - not fussed about the advantages of keyboard and mouse.

More power to anyone who uses mouse and kb - or even a joypad - but I'd no more use them to fly a ship in Elite than I would to drive my car. Properly setup HOTAS just feels right, if that ever puts me at a disadvantage ... tuff.

I used KBM for a couple months and it was ok, I really started to enjoy the game once I got my HOTAS. It might not be the best method but it is the one that i enjoy the most.
