Hull integrity damage making long distance exploration pointless?

I just spent a frustrating couple of hours getting back to the inhabited systems (being interdicted by NPC ships at every star, but that's a topic for another thread) after a three week exploration trek only to discover the hull integrity on the repair screen was down to 45%. I only went as far as 2000 ly in total and I read somewhere on here that flying in FSD damages the hull integrity. That's realistic and I'm all for realism in a game like this but surely that defeats the whole point of doing long distance exploration trips since doing detailed scans of planets involves flying in FSD for long periods? Since you can't repair hull integrity (and that's not the hull % displayed on the main HUD, that's the one shown only at the top of the repair screen at a station) what's going to happen when it gets to 0% and you're 1000's of light years from a station? Boom! Weeks of time and effort down the toilet? I hope I'm wrong here?

As far as i know it goes down to 30% and stays there. To be honest, i have never repaired integrity any of my non combat ships (including the Asp, which i took for several few thousand ly trips) and i dont see any problems. So, unless im wrong, you dont have to worry about it.

Don't worry - you won't go boom. It just drops your hull strength to about 70% of its ability to absorb damage.

It is only the distance flown in SC that impacts ship integrity the most. Hyper jumps do not or almost do not affect ship integrity. So basically you can jump for 1000LY almost without any damage, however, if you fly to any stellar object within the system - that's where are you going to get the ship integrity damage from. The only option for now is probably to choose a cheaper ship for exploration, i.e. the ship that requires much less to be repaired.

Hull integrity reduces your "hit points", and when it bottoms out you're left with 30% of the full hull HP. You won't die from that value reacing zero, but you need to be more and more wary of pirates and heat.

I'm still trying to figure it out, but it 'seems' that if you do not exceed the blue speed indicator, I use a shortcut for 75% throttle, then you do not really get wear and tear, so it would seem it is related with speed, will post findings later.

That's good to know. Thanks for the info, everyone. It would be great if, as someone posted in another thread, we could one day park our ships and go outside in a space-suit and do some repairs to the hull. Maybe buy some hull plating and weld it on? lol. Well, it's good to know it won't destroy the ship if the integrity drops.
