Hull Mass Question Regarding Shield Generator

Currently I have a 5A shield generator on my Asp X and I am thinking about changing to a 3A shield generator so I can add a 5A GFSD booster to my Asp X.

In "Starport Services > Shipyard" the base Asp X has a hull mass of 280 tons.

Under outfitting my current Asp X set up has my "Total Mass" at: 417.5 / 432.9 / 1,260.0 T. I have upgraded and engineered numerous modules and added modules like a 6A fuel scoop and three shield boosters.

What do these numbers mean?

In "Outfitting" the 3A SG lists optimal hull mass at 165.0 T and maximum hull mass at 413.0 T while in "Outfitting" the 5A SG installed on my ship is listed at 405.0 optimal hull mass and 1,013.0 maximum hull mass. Switching to a 3A would reduce my mass by 15 tons.

Hull mass is not the same as ship mass. That's more like the volume of your ship, which has to covered by the shield. It never changes.

The 3 values are your current/laden/maximum (I believe not 100% since I'm not in game) actual mass, which is more a factor for your thrusters and FSD.

metatheurgist has it right, for shields you only care about the hull mass, which never changes.

And to clarify the last number: this is the maximum ship mass (not hull) your current thrusters can handle.

I tend to favor the armored PP that said.
Don't miss the high G shield test!
