Actually it's a DDF thread based upon a discussion in the Alpha (and possibly elsewhere)
Currently the Alpha always shows human pilots - If you watch any of the MP videos the hollow squares (human - guns stowed) and hollow triangle (human - guns out) are shown immediately upon meeting someone. (I think those shapes are the right way round - can't remember now)
The question asked is "how do you want to see other human pilots" - hidden / shown / require a scan / opt-in.

For the record, Alpha and DDF are not interchangeable. I believe DDF access was a larger backing on the Kickstarter.
I have Alpha forum access but not DDF forum access. I can't view the poll either.
But if I could vote I'd vote to not have it obvious on radar. Maybe on left panel to see CMDR XYZZY but I kind of lean towards the desire to be AS wary of the NPCs (improved AI) as the average pilot. Of course, there's something to be said for that cold blanket of fear as the blood drains from your face when you see the name of an Ace pilot or the hot rush of adrenaline when you spot a nemesis.
I still want that but maybe not from such a safe distance?

Yep, there's 2 scan options with nary a soul voting for advanced.Early days yet (<50 votes) but already there is a clear favourite - opt in.
Hmm, wonder what they mean by opt in... Either I can show everyone I am a PC or hide it?

I am also for the neutral icons and name pop up on the side panel, or maybe a scan.
But having read the other DDF archive I feel that they are rather good at finding good compromises, so I hope the results here will reflect that as well.

"Opt-in" means "I'll show you my humanity if you show me yours"... so, um, yes optionally exposing yourself, so to speak.
That would get my vote, followed by..
Sadly I'm not rich enough to have a vote so I'll pin my hopes on the more imaginative folks in the DDF to vote for some extra spice in MP gameplay
