Newcomer / Intro Hunt missions

I've recently starting taking on hunt missions "Kill X number of pirates/civilians/freighters in X system" and every time I start checking signal sources with a target it them, my mission gets overwritten by one that was forced on me by the target. Since it usually entails either no pay or attacking system authority vessels (and let's say for argument's sake I like that system), I cancel that mission and I find that both the original mission is gone as well. Am I doing something wrong here, or am I forced to take the mission that the target gave me at that point? Would really appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

While the description gets overwritten, and unfortunately your kill count reset to 0, you can still persue the original mission normally. Don't abandon anything, just continue killing pirates (or whatever it was you were sent to do) and you should be able to complete the mission.

The best way to determine pirate status is to see what they say in the comms window when they scan you. Pirates will say things that indicate they're looking for loot. Once you've identified a pirate take a look at their faction affiliation. Chances are any other NPCs you see of the same faction are pirates as well.

The KWS is just for getting the most bounty out of any kill. It serves no other purpose.

When offered an alternative mission or 'contract update', just ignore the alternative terms & stick with the original mission.
DO NOT ABANDON MISSION... this will cancel the original mission.
I found that out months ago, and soon worked out my error!

Kill Warrant Scanner (KWS) will tell you if the target has any bounties in other systems. But a KWS won't identify a bountied target as being a pirate. Pirates will always scan you for cargo and/or make a comm declaration for you to give up your cargo. I'm not sure if interdictors are classed as pirates, but in most instances when I have been interdicted whilst on a pirate hunt mission, they've usually counted to fulfilling the objective.

Ignore the updated mission , just carry on as the original tells you.... In my experience stick to kill pirate missions... They are at uss,,,, they come up scan , nasty message and are nearly always wanted...no need to kws.... Much easierthanchasing traders, bounty hunters....these missions get YOU wanted...

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I need to invest in a notepad to keep track of how many I need to kill and where to turn it in each time, though I do hope there's an update planned to add that as an additional mission instead of overwriting the first one. Much appreciated.

Not since the latest update, apparently. The description gets overwritten, but the total targets and kill count stay the same. I asked this while I was downloading the update, so it's really my fault for not trying first.
