Hi, I'd been hearing that the assassination missions were bugged and could not be completed, but I decided to try one just for kicks. I was successful so just wanted to pass on the experience.
In any case, I mainly wanted to report how I succeeded and my surprise that the mission was not broken.
The mission given by a Federation minor faction specified Gen. Coman 3 systems including the one the mission started in as possible locations. I searched for USS in my current one and decided to move to the second potential site after 5 negative USS's. In the second system, the second USS contained a clean sidewinder which said that Gen. Coman was involved in an attack in a forth system. I got a message saying Contract Updated. I immediately went to that system and started looking for USS. The second one contained a hauler which told me it would be a mistake to kill Gen. Coman and to instead attack another target in my starting system. I decided I would stick with trying to find Gen Coman in the forth system. 2 more USS later I came across a clean elite Federal Dropship. The name of the pilot was simply "federal security service." I was about to FSD away when it started to attack me even though I was clean in all systems and the ship did not scan me first. He said something like - "Big mistake coming after me."
I killed him off and I got a mission complete message and a 6000CR wanted bounty on my head!
I'm confused that I was sent by one federal faction to attack a federal security service ship, where the pilot was not named as my target.
