Hunting Mission Gets Updated - Stupid!

So I take a mission to hunt some pirates. When I find a signal and drop into it my mission is updated to, instead of shoot the pirates, now shoot "Authority." Now, I assume this is the same authority that handles the legal system in game. If so, it is stupid that my mission is updated, without my choosing, so that I have to shoot down authority vessels, thus rendering me wanted in the system. That's ridiculous. How am I supposed to complete the mission and make a little credit?

I tested this by shooting down the Cobra vessel that was in my signal and nothing happened. I am now forced to shoot Authority.

What is wrong here?

Yes I understand you. It can be confusing. As Kitiara said, you don't have anything to do. Either just go along without changing anything, or start shooting at the new targets. The game will do the rest.

The first time it happened to me I was confused about what to do, and I ended up abandonning the original assignement, thinking that I was refusing the update. Result: I lost rep with the Prajau Democrats, with whom I was trying to get along, and won rep with the Mod of Benapus, a group of petty pirates who spend most of their time interdicting me and throw lasers at my shields. The funny part was that the update proposal was all "please don't be a murderer, they are innocent people, come and talk to me about it, I'll show you the error of your ways boooohoooo!". The mob of Benapus. Innocent. Suuuure. And we'll play guitar and make nice goat cheese, he?

Also, I don't know if anyone noticed this already, but once someone makes a counter proposition to your current contract, this one resets! Say you have killed three targets out of six already, well you're back to six to kill. I should probably ticket this.

You can still complete the original mission for the original fee if you want. The alternate is always more money, but not a huge amount more, so it may be more important to keep your rep with the faction who originally gave you the mission.

There is a problem with these missions, though: if you have any number of kills before being offered and alternative, the offering resets your kill counter.
