Hunting Osseus

Hi,

Just getting back into elite after a bitof a break - doing some exploration which was one of my happy places. I've been looking at the biological signals on one planet.

Have managed to find most of them 6/7 (bacteria gave me some trouble but have since realised they're much easier to find from the air than SRV).

Have found literally hundreds of the 6 things I've found now, but not found a single one of the 7th - Osseus.

The DSS shows it over pretty much the whole planet (only the tops of the monuntains issing it)

The Codex says "found exclusively on rocky areas" I've looked for rocky areas - not found it.

Is there something I'm missing? Is my idea of a Rocky area wrong?

Generally, I find the osseus in areas where the terrain is quite regular, with is a mix of flat and rocky area, and they are always on the rocky portions.
With regular, I mean not excessively mountainous, but it does not have to be flat: many times they are on mild hill sides, or on the slope of a crater.
Given their size, they tend to stand out from the surrounding terrain and can be easily spotted from a distance.

Give yourself a time limit, though: they can be quite tricky to find, sometimes, and it's not worth it spending too much time on biologicals (unless you are a completionist; in that case, be prepared for long hunting sessions!).

Thanks for all the answers - I'll have a look around the bases of some mountains, your point about it being choked out by other plant life my be valid - there seems to be lots of the other stuff on this planet.
Have to say I'm actually really enjoying the biologicals side of exploration - it really adds another dimension to the exploration of planets!

Good thing with Osseus is they are often big enough to see from the air, so you don't have to waste time driving around in the SRV. As others have said though, they can be rare sometimes (not always).

I have also seen areas where they are all over the place so yes, sometimes. I once spent two days finding three samples but that's me, just wanted to prove whether or not the location map was accurate, it was. Rather than doing that again I more would drop into a couple of different location with different features and ground colours to see of I could find an area where they were more common, that's if I really wanted to find them.

I found a post from someone who uses their "vanity camera" to see below the ship as they fly low. It didn't occur to me what they meant until I did the external camera view and the tip is gold. I spent several hours looking for Osseus Discus around mountains and rocks in the sand, but eventually was able to find them consistently around the rims of craters. That might be another good spot to check if you're finding everything else but Osseus.

Yeah, the disc osseus seems to like craters. The more mushroom-like are the rocky patch ones.
