I've made it to Smeaton before...had no choice, my Type 6 didn't have the gas for another jump and brilliant me forgot the fuel scoop (yeah, fixed that at Smeaton LOL). Hmm...never knew a Type 6 could break 2,000c!
AFAIK all ships "top out" at 2001c when they are truly in the middle of nowhere.
I tried it once, in my Cobra. The only mistake I made was not taking enough MREs with me... died of starvation about 20,000ls from the station...

Having recently rescued a stranded CMDR about 14K Ls out from the station, make sure you have the fuel for it.
I'm looking forward to my trip to Hutton Orbital, although probably not until that competition mug thing is in stock.

I still haven't worked out why someone would want to go out so far or why FD decided to put stations at that distance. There is no price advantage for trading, not that you could get outfitting advantage not available anywhere else, could a rares run be worth it (don't know I've never done one before)? Any suggestions?
there are rares just to get on some stations far out. so, if you, like me, made a project to trade all rares in game (because, like me, you enjoy the task and like the rare descriptions), you will do some of those travels.

in everyday gameplay i always look whether a station is more than 20 000 ls away, before i pick up any mission, though.
tl;dr.: nothing in e:d is "worth it", besides the fun you have to do it.
