Problem with
any new ship is that FDev can't really win.
If they make a new ship better than existing ones, they're criticised for making everybody's existing ships redundant and for "escalation".
If they make the ship worse than existing ones, they'll be criticised for adding a "pointless" ship.
If they make it comparable with an existing one, they're criticised for being derivitive.
Honestly, I think FDev need to take another look at the way ships are handled in-game before they bother adding any new ones.
IMO, the game could use a heap of different variables by which ships could be judged and then different ships could have different strengths and weaknesses; things like reliability, ease of maintenance, stealth, strength etc.
Do that and you give people more choices to make, depending on what their priorities are.
For example, an AspX might be easy to repair, using commonly found mat's, while a comparable Guardian-hybrid ship might be lighter, faster and have superior jump-range but it requires rare mat's, and more of 'em to repair it.
Explorers would have the choice of either using an AspX and knowing they can easily repair their ship if they need to
or they could use the hybrid ship and know they'd have to be really, really careful to avoid damage while out exploring.
Basically, FDev need to implement a bunch of extra ship-related factors and
then they can add new ships which have a more diverse range of advantages and disadvantages.
