Chieftain Hybrid tank Bulkheads Enginneering

Please help me to understand why everybody is advicing to use Reactive surface+thermal resistance engineering for pvp, when pvp meta builds use absolute damages (plasma accelerators negating resists builds). Wouldn't raw armor be better than reactice+thermal when facing meta builds ?

According to Coriolis https://s.orbis.zone/dz3r a class 3 efficient + oversized PA has a sustained DPS of 26 but that's made up of 16 absolute + 5 thermal +5 kinetic so it has around 60% absolute damage (it may have had 100% absolute at some point I'm not sure)

The reactive armour + thermal resist + deep plating has a a good balance of resistances unlike the mil armour + heavy duty + deep plating which is more focused on thermal/kinetic, it's also lower in mass which doesn't hurt either.

For a hybrid tank you can use reactive heavy duty deep plating and make the smallest HRP a thermal resist. Alternatively, you can use reflective armor engineered for kinetic resistance + force block. This biuld requires point defense but can work because missiles are not really used for hull depletion. The stacked HD HRP should still bring explosive resistance into the positives besides. Of course from a purely pragmatic standpoint, the slightly improved resistance but dramatic increased cost of either reactive or reflective would need to save your ship hundreds of times to recover its cost. I often use the cheaper mil grade armor because it keeps the rebuy down and frankly fights are seldom close enough for it to really matter. Organic pvp tends to be asymmetrical.

As for your question, many people wrongly believe thst "balanced" resistance is what you should strive for. Having no perceived weakness is why people recommend it but its not great advice.

  1. Railguns are popular too, and are 2/3 thermal, 1/3 kinetic.
  2. Not every opponent runs the meta build. Got to be prepared for the occasional multi or frag.
  3. The Heavy Duty HP multiplier applies only to the HD-modded item, while the resistances protect all armour. On ships getting a significant portion of their HP from Hull Reinforcement Packages, resistance mods become more valuable.
