Improvements to the Hyperspace jumping have been progressive, but few and far between, so far between that we have probably not noticed the steps (and I may have missed some myself):
It's a monotonous process, if you want to travel somewhere, pointing, press for jump, countdown timer, jump, arrive at star, slide around star to next waypoint, press for jump ...., although the sliding around the star to the next target can be used for valuable fuel scooping as you travel, rather than stopping intermittently to scoop fuel. (Note - I am making a distinction between travel and exploration.)
If it were automated, could an onboard computer do these tasks, and take you to the next Fuel Star without intervention? It would have to:
Would this improve QOL for players? It would automate the travel process to a given star, assuming you didn't want to fuel scoop or explore systems on the way there. As with the Supercruise Assist, it would "allow you to do other things while travelling," paraphrasing what FDev said when introducing this latest feature.
And yet the arguments that periodically surface about the 'time-wasting' expanse of space are that:
Those of us hoping for Legs might see this as an opportunity to do tasks on-board as we travel, without interruption from attending to regular jump sequences. This would address the "nothing to do" complaints. The whole process could be speeded up, which would address the 'takes too long' complaints.
Personally, I fall into the category thinking this is a forerunner to Legs activities on board.
Do you agree with me that this is likely coming? Would it improve QOL in the game, at least as it stands at the moment, or would it decrease it by making hyperspace jumping more boring? Am I just going space mad?
- Ship no longer jumps out between a binary pair, leaving your ship to cook.
- Hyperspace cut-scene improved.
- Ship jumps out in front of main star, usually dead center.
- Target star automatically aligned before hyper jump.
- Notification in Galmap of a "Fuel Star."
- Autocruise Assist automatically disengages supercruise max thrust on jump out at target star.
- Nav panel appears to load up way points, taking several seconds after Galmap has plotted the points.

If it were automated, could an onboard computer do these tasks, and take you to the next Fuel Star without intervention? It would have to:
- stop or slow down at the hyperspace jump out point (now it does that),
- identify the next stellar way point (it's in the Nav Panel automatically selected),
- proceed around the star at a safe (non-cooking) distance in order to target the next stellar way point,
- then auto jump.

And yet the arguments that periodically surface about the 'time-wasting' expanse of space are that:
- it takes too long to reach anywhere
- there's nothing to do, en route.
