Hypercruise Assist - Are Developments Afoot ? Would they Improve Travel QOL ?

Improvements to the Hyperspace jumping have been progressive, but few and far between, so far between that we have probably not noticed the steps (and I may have missed some myself):

  1. Ship no longer jumps out between a binary pair, leaving your ship to cook.
  2. Hyperspace cut-scene improved.
  3. Ship jumps out in front of main star, usually dead center.
  4. Target star automatically aligned before hyper jump.
  5. Notification in Galmap of a "Fuel Star."
  6. Autocruise Assist automatically disengages supercruise max thrust on jump out at target star.
  7. Nav panel appears to load up way points, taking several seconds after Galmap has plotted the points.
Are we about to see an automated system of flying a set of way points next? Would this be feasible and would it improve our QOL?

It's a monotonous process, if you want to travel somewhere, pointing, press for jump, countdown timer, jump, arrive at star, slide around star to next waypoint, press for jump ...., although the sliding around the star to the next target can be used for valuable fuel scooping as you travel, rather than stopping intermittently to scoop fuel. (Note - I am making a distinction between travel and exploration.)

If it were automated, could an onboard computer do these tasks, and take you to the next Fuel Star without intervention? It would have to:
  • stop or slow down at the hyperspace jump out point (now it does that),
  • identify the next stellar way point (it's in the Nav Panel automatically selected),
  • proceed around the star at a safe (non-cooking) distance in order to target the next stellar way point,
  • then auto jump.
We really only have the last two items left to deal with, although a decision would be required about what to do at each refuelling point.

Would this improve QOL for players? It would automate the travel process to a given star, assuming you didn't want to fuel scoop or explore systems on the way there. As with the Supercruise Assist, it would "allow you to do other things while travelling," paraphrasing what FDev said when introducing this latest feature.

And yet the arguments that periodically surface about the 'time-wasting' expanse of space are that:
  • it takes too long to reach anywhere
  • there's nothing to do, en route.
The cynic would say (perhaps) that automated travel would free up the game to allow them to watch Netflix uninterrupted.
Those of us hoping for Legs might see this as an opportunity to do tasks on-board as we travel, without interruption from attending to regular jump sequences. This would address the "nothing to do" complaints. The whole process could be speeded up, which would address the 'takes too long' complaints.

Personally, I fall into the category thinking this is a forerunner to Legs activities on board.

Do you agree with me that this is likely coming? Would it improve QOL in the game, at least as it stands at the moment, or would it decrease it by making hyperspace jumping more boring? Am I just going space mad?

I think the question to ask is:
- if it takes ten minutes to go from A to B
- and going from A to B is an expected regular thing to do
- but nothing happens on the way [1]
...why not just place B closer to A in the first place?

Personally I'd rather they fixed this by changing the "nothing happens on the way" bit, not by giving even more of an autopilot so you can go and make a drink while the nothing happens.

[1] And anything "space legs" provides in the way of things to do must be optional, of course, so I don't know how successful that would be at providing other things to do.

So in addition to yet another stargate suggestion in that forum here we have another "hyperspace travel takes too long, why do I have to make all these jumps?" thread.

;)
LOL ... no it's not a "space is too big" post. In fact, I think complainers about that ought to find another game. But it looks to me that we are approaching the point when hyperspace jumping will become semi-automated, unless there is a strong kickback against it.

The question is, what are we expected to do while that happens?

Yes, events are very lacking for hyperjumping around space, except for the occasional hyperdiction.

Hyperspace interdiction by players? NPCs? Other aliens?

The problem with on-board Legs keeping us busy is that it invites gameplay merely to occupy our time, rather than contribute to the gameplay quality. So some very careful balancing would have to be instigated if this were introduced.

I can understand an emergency arising, and you have to go into the ship to fix it. On an Anaconda, this would be a sure way of balancing its desirability for long distance travel if the 'wobbulator room' which needs fixing is a long long way from the cockpit. :)

It sounds pretty cool ... but in practice I suspect what would happen is that those players who valued reliability would deliberately not buy the space legs expansion, so that either the emergency couldn't happen to them, or they could fix it by pressing the fallback "fix emergency" button on their space chair.
