Hyperdrive ? no more Hyperjump ?

I've never thought that video represented a hyperspace jump, I mean where's the wormhole?

And David has still been mentioning recently that hyperspace is connecting two points in space with a tunnel of some kind hasn't he?

I'd always assumed hyperspace was still going to be a tunnel between two points type thing. That's more believable than the ludicrous speed required to actually move from one star system to another through all the intervening space to me.

For me it was always about a short cut.

There no reason it couldn't have an entrance animation, a looped tunnel animation and an exit animation all nicely joined together.

The middle bit will have to loop some how as the load time's vary and can't be predicted by how much in advance. (at least at present in A3)

No, hyperjump doesn't implies wormhole, it is just sci-fi setup of it in lot of universes. Battleship Galactica and other sci-fi settings don't use wormhole. I must admit this looks much better than wormhole, which always have felt forced.

Hyperjump IS a wormhole entering.. to shortcut the space between two star systems

Hyperdrive is like in Startrek ..a warp drive engine to ski the space.

Until now i belived that Elite uses a Hyperjump system instead of a warp drive method.

I feel surprised by that.. but not so disappointed.
Anything is ok for me, no problem.
I just need clarity

This is taken from the DDF proposal for the Frame Shift Drive:

Both super-cruise and hyperspace travel are inertia-less. Both are closely related, and involve shifting the frame of reference such that distances become very much contracted – essentially distorting space-time in the immediate vicinity to achieve this effect. This means people travelling on such a ship do not feel an acceleration when doing so (though that’s not to say it doesn’t involve jolts and some violent motions so people should be strapped in!):

This certainly seem to imply warping space-time around the ship instead of punching a hole in it.

I think that, or the sequence we saw in the capital ship video. Anything but an instant journey from one location to the next.

If the galaxy is to have that immense feeling of scale, then nothing can dilute that more than instant travel. So I'm all for some animation sequence that actually takes time to complete, the further the journey the longer the animation lasts.

Iain's outlook feels like the better option - but I guess we will soon know for sure within a fortnight or so.

For those of you who believe it is going to be like the CGI intro (which is not in game video), how do you propose things like hyperspace cloud scanning will work (will this be in the game, like it was in Frontier elite 2?).

I assumed the hyperspace clouds will exist, since in the scenarios from Alpha 1, the incursion scenario had the blue hyperspace exit cloud as new ships were coming in (as does the last scenario) for that matter.

I guess you could have the flawless travel with these artefacts being left behind, but the idea of tunnelling through space would lead itself more to leaving artefacts/clouds behind at the entrance/exit wouldn't it?

I dont see how this changes things... as soon as you enter warp you leave behind some kind of trail (like FSD will leave a trail) but this would be some kind of energized cloud that can be analysed, same with your arrival...
