Hyperspace jump audio effects

I'm really impressed with the sounds accompanying the hyperspace jump. The build up to speed, the sudden relative quiet as you actually travel 'on alien winds', followed by the shock of emergence, and as that sounds fades, the eeriness of your engine sound seems to emphasise the insignificance of your tiny ship, bathed in the light of an alien sun.

Wow.

It feels spooky, and I'm all for that. Travelling to a new system should not fele like catching the Park and Ride, it should be an Event.

Well done Frontier's sound people, this is terrific, don't lose the spookiness, please.

(I also think the background sound on the navigation map is lovely.)

Here here! (Or should that be Hear! Hear!!!!) - I have only watched and listened via YouTube so far but I am so looking forward to experiencing that first hand on 30th May. I spent a sizeable part of the weekend just replaying the various videos that had a hyperspace jump in them. Just an amazing sound and experience all round.

Yep - I was greatly dissapointed at the loss of witch-space, but the spooky hyperspace concept really is excellent. Don't loose the spookiness of Hyperspace/witchspace!

Whhahhhhaaat?!?! No Thargoids?!?

Seriously, is there not going to be any magical beings? But then again, I don't want you to answer, because...

I still remember being 'Intercepted' by my first Thargoid ambush in Elite Plus.

After using my rear pulse laser to fend off yet another pirate attack before making the jump to safe space to using my new found cash... I dial in my target system and hear the 'ticks' as I count down to Hyperspace jump.

I relax and lean back happily in my chair while listening to the all-so-familiar little 'Telephone Ring' sound as I pass through the multi-color concentric circles of space travel... I close my eyes to rest them, yet still have the imprints of the constant vector drawn laser fire when I notice something is wrong.

The normal ringy sound was abruptly cut off and replaced by the sounds of multiple lasers hitting my shields!

I paniced as my fingers frantically tried to find the steering keypad and thruster speed controls, but I was too late... The little fragments of my ship, cargo, and bank account were floating in front of me as I sat eyes wide open, jaw dropped to the floor, and brain just on pause...

I remember being immediately returned to the 'Game Intro' Screen that presented the familiar music and fantastic wire images that always brought excitement and anticipation to my senses... But now, they only brought me one expression that autonomically escaped my lips...

Holy <Bleep>!!!!!

Awww, come on... Interdictions are fine, but don't take away the mysterious possibility of the unknown Thargoid attack!

Because as every Elite player knows...

"NOONE EXPECTS THE <THARGOID> INQUISITION!!!"

Thanks,

Vic...

P.S. Aww crap, did I just ruin it for everyone?!?!

So far you can only be interdicted during supercruise. Maybe Thargoids have the tech to interdict during hyperdrive? Wouldn't that be fun? Stuck in deep space with angry aliens blowing you away while you frantically try to spin-up your drive. ;)

the sound of going into Supercruise, just as you come out of hyperspace sounds just like a commercial airliner when they sometimes make that low groaning type noise.

I love the sounds as well, really well done.

Wife not impressed

I was so struck by some YouTube footage of a Hyperspace jump that I sat my wife down to watch it and handed her some headphones, saying "You'll need these".

I watched her watch the jump and when it finished said "Isn't that just incredible?"

Her reaction was "Meh"

I guess she's not an Elite fan...

I find the best part about hyperspace the exit. That light rushing towards you with a force as if to crush your ship, just to dissolve into the view of a gigantic star outside the cockpit, your eyes still adjusting to the sensation.:D

That is a stunning effect. A real, abrupt end to snap you back to reality.

The soundscape in this game in general is just great. Seriously. Props to the audio team.

Definately! Audio is often overlooked in games as a lot of people are taken by visual effects and AI. The sounds are just as stunning as the visuals in ED. I described them to someone earlier on today as "award-winning calibre."

I've sat my wife down in front of so many ED vids that she now thinks I have been brainwashed by a cyber cult. The thing is, her reactions are now becoming slightly more enthusiastic than "Meh."

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I love that winding down sound you hear when exiting hyperspace.

Totally agree. I mean, I like all the sounds with Hyperspace, but the audio when you exit and have that star pop in front of you is breathtaking.

And it would be a shame if it is only a placeholder and got replaced by something less impressive.

I've also heard that its currently only a placeholder. I seriously doubt though that they would remove anything fromm it. I think it will only get better which is great I think because just now even though its brilliant it reminds me a bit too much of Dr Who and I keep expecting images of the previous and current Dr to pop up on the screen :p
