Actually you could be onto something there, but it would need to be tightly controlled.
On the "main" server, when a set percentage of players have gone through enough "Instancing" - as you put it - the "galaxy clock moves forward by a fixed amount (with the players never actually seeing the clock), it brings everyone else "forward" so that everyone is up to date - and possibly factoring the multiplayer events into news reports available for everyone to read ingame while travelling through space or on bases.
This way it would allow for dynamic economies - and include the option of your activities being recognised in the galactic media ingame.
