Newcomer / Intro Hyperspaced jumped into a star (1st mission to Dromi) ??

I just started playing Elite today after it has been sat in my steam folder for months. The first training missions were pretty straight forward and I got to the part where you get your licence and then you can go to dromi to pick up 10K credits. So I went into the galaxy map selected dromi, exited the station, got out of mass lock, aligned to my target, then activated Hyperspace. All seemed to be going well, then the ship decelrated out of hyperspace and literally came out of hypersapce right on top of a star resulting in my untimely demise.......

As han solo said, travelling through hyperspace isn't like dusting crops, however I am not sure what went wrong ? I tried to move out of the stars range, but my systems literally got fried so I just accepted death and respawned in the dromi station. no real harm done as I still got my 10k credits and got to Dromi and it is only the starter ship, but for the life of me I don't know what I did incorrectly ? Any chance of someone pointing out the errors of my ways on this one ?

I'm new to the game as well, but hyperjumps end with you pointing at the star. You need to be ready to ease off the throttle and turn away from the star.

If you DO get caught by a star, let your Frameshift Drive reset and hit Supercruise. As that's charging, look for a big blue "ESCAPE VECTOR" target somewhere in view. Align with that and you jump away from the star.

Now the real fun is when you get in star trouble and then a pirate jumps in. Then you get to be both ON fire and UNDER fire. Same thing, though. Charge FSD, aim for ESCAPE VECTOR.

Easiest way to avoid fiery death until you get used to it is to hit zero throttle whilst you're in the 'tunnel'. Do that and you'll come out still facing the star but at a dead stop, which will give you time to get your bearings and generally not self-immolate.

Edit: Oh and respect for the Travis avatar. I'd have given you more for Avon, but that will do 😁

If you have SuperCruise Assist (SCA) and you probably do if in the starter ship, look in right hand panel under 'Ship' and scroll down if needed, one of the menus here has 'Manual throttle' or something that says SCA will control throttle speed. Set that to manual, when you want to engage SCA put throttle to 75% and it will kick in, slow down or speed up and you get manual control again, much easier for navigating generally or getting places faster by flying 100% until nearer, say 30s time left for now and hit 75% to let SCA finish the journey.

Also in the same menu is 'Supercruise Dethrottle' or something that says SCA will auto throttle to zero when jumping, saves worrying about it. then just aim away from the star completely and throttle up.

If you have orbit lines on and you probably do, its in Ship menu again if not, the white line around a body or star is the exclusion zone. Fly lower than this and you will drop out of SC, into normal space at Stars and objects and non-landables, and into Glide on landables.

Someone in game please get the proper commands from the menu and post them here if possible.

Shows you how long it is since I did the new player experience lol, SCA didn't even exist then and I've still never equipped it on any of my ships, so if it is on the starter ship by default, listen to Vetinari.

I'm never giving an auto-anything control over my ship throttle (other than the basic docking computer on my T-9, because I just can't be bothered docking the space cow when I'm flying A > B trade missions and I'm in and out of stations every five minutes.)

I don't know of anyone that hasn't had a run-in with a star when they first started playing.
They're (stars) are always an obstacle for everyone every time they jump. You'll learn how to deal with em quickly enough.
But the risks are further complicated when (on a long enough time line) you jump in between close binary stars. If yer not prepared with heat sinks, your flying goose gets cooked.

It sounds to me like OP already has supercruise assist enabled and he was caught in a secondary star (not the primary). This happens sometimes when jumping to systems with multiple stars close by. If that's actual the issue, disabling supercruise assist should make him fly though it instead of being stuck in it. I could be wrong but I guess we need more information to properly advise.

thanks for the replies, I worked it out, i needed to pull up as i droped out to avoid the star. So only got roasted the one time. next thing I just learnt really quickly is that when a blue escape vector pops up it's probably best to head towards it and keep on that trajectory. So my next encounter was getting interdicted back to the stoneage, so in my haste to get out I engaged supercruise and then flew into another star !!

this is pretty good fun learning.

I think the main thing slowing me down is trying to remember all the binds for the critical functions on my HOTAS, using an X56 and after each crash and burn I am going back to the bindings menu and working out what I need where to make things easier. Reckon it will take me a few weeks to get the binds to where I want them as I learn different aspects of the game. Only visited 2 stations so far just to get used to docking, undocking and not flying into stuff. But all in all it's been a pretty fun experience so far.

You don't even need a point selected to jump into SC. While in between hitting the throttle and pounding boost to get out of weapons range, hit supercruise (SC). At some point for you, those interdictions will be an irritating scratch. They're generally easy to get out of. I don't even bother wasting my time in stopping to fight anymore.

I'm on ps4 and it took me a good 2-3 weeks to remember all the bindings. Eventually it will all become 2nd nature once you're settled in.

I found the various tutorials and training scenarios you can now access from the right hand menu as well as the start screen were ideal for setting up my controls, if only because I got a repeatable situation so it was easier to tell if I had made things better or not.

Remember that always when you jump to other system, ship will always be aiming at the star, at full throttle, it's like every ship wants to kill itself, but if you have a SUPERCRUISE ASSIST module, it will help him remember that the best moments are yet to come, and convinces the ship -E V E R Y T I M E- that life has value, even if you're just a piece of technology, and the suicidal-machine throttles to minimum speed to avoid crashing into the star. If you don't have the module, you can convince yourself the ship that life has value, just by throttling down your speed and not crashing onto the planet.

Crashing into the star at speed does remarkably little damage, about the same as doing an emergency drop from cruise, the hazardous bit is escaping again.

To escape you have to wait while your Frame Shift Drive cools down, while you are waiting you can shutdown inessential modules such as weapons, shields etc. this will reduce heat build up during your escape.
The next step is to target the star you have crashed into then turn your ship so that it is directly behind you.
When that is done and the FSD is cooled start the jump into cruise, the escape vector should appear in front of you, the charging will cause a lot of heat which can cause a lot of damage this is why you shutdown so much stuff and pre-aligned the ship. Once you are in cruise you can turn your modules back on and set your original destination.

If you have heatsinks available you can use them to stop the heat build up so won’t need to shutdown modules.

I got in the habit of pulling my throttle back to zero when the jump animation starts - that way you arrive and stop (well, at min speed 30 m/s). When you are more comfortable with things you might try to emulate the buckyball racers by not throttling back but instead turn to head around the star on arrival. (Although I prefer safety over speed.)

You might want to visit https://edrefcard.info/ where, if you follow the instructions, you can produce and download a printable graphic of your bindings - print-out, pin-up and never be left floundering again.
Good luck

I used the racing flyby from the very first, I dislike the SCA and manual throttle back as I believe it encourages bad practices like going away from the keyboard you will crash into the arrival star if you do that even at 30.

edrefcard was my first port of call before I even loaded the game the first time. I printed out a blank x56 sheet and I am using it to note down where I am moving binds. When it's done I am going to upload the custom binds file into edref and then print out a copy and probably laminate it and have it on the noteic board above my monitor for quick reference
