Engineers I absolutely love the Engineers (despite the shortcomings) and here's why:

I love Elite Dangerous. It's a great game with amazing flight mechanics, and best of all, it allows me to do what most of us will never be able to do in our lifetimes: Explore our galaxy.

However, before the Engineers update, Elite was often referred to as a "sandbox with very little sand". Why?

Bounty Hunting/Combat: NPCs were ridiculously . I love combat, but with the AI being so useless, it hardly felt fulfilling. Plus, what was the point? You went to an RES, killed ships to get credits, in order to be able to buy better ships/modules so you can kill ships faster, so you can get credits faster, so you can... you get the point. The AI being so bad, combat often got boring (excluding PVP, which I really don't care for). What was the point? Getting a bigger, badder and meaner ship? Once you had that ship, then what? A lot of Elite players are sitting on their Anacondas and Corvettes with billions of credits in their accounts and not much to do with them. Once you fit your ship with the "best loadout" available, that was it. Done.

It didn't matter what ship you flew. NPCs loved to just sit there in your crosshairs, so getting kills wasn't hard, at all. In fact, getting a bigger, badder ship progressively made combat more boring. I could literally sit in an FDL and blow anything and everything without even having to move much. I only moved when I had to find a new "camping spot" in which NPCs would once again jump into my crosshairs so I could kill them.

I mean, once you had a bigger, badder ship, everything else below it would melt instantly, and everything else above it would melt *almost* instantly. Vulture? Nevermind the Vulture is a ship with much more maneuverability than an FDL. The agile, fast ships were flown as if they had no thrusters at all. It was utterly pathetic.

It was easy to take on a wing of 3, 4 or even 5 ships, even if 1 or 2 of those ships were Anacondas. It just was like stealing candy from a child. They died, quickly. Yes, there were very very rare times in which I might have lost my shields, and maybe even some hull, but for the most part, it was just... easy.

No matter what you did, there was little or no sense of accomplishment, at all.

Smuggling/Pirating: Never did it, but once again, what was the purpose? Get credits so you can smuggle and pirate better. Woooo. Great.

Exploration: The only thing I love more than combat. It was good, and it hasn't changed much. In fact, often I thought "man, I wanna visit that nebula over there, but I just can't reach it". I spent a lot of my Elite career exploring. At least with exploration you get to see things a lot of people won't see in the bubble, and as an added bonus, you get to slap your name here and there when you are the first to discover something.

Missions: Let's not even go there. The only missions even worth something were the ones to get ranks so you can have access to certain ships. The rest? Not so much. "Oh look, this mission pays a whopping 100,000 credits. Wait, I have to do what? 200ly trip? Yeah... I could go to the RES next door, slap some NPCs silly and make 5 million in an hour... screw that."

I could go on and on, about how many aspects of Elite were pretty shallow.

Now, with Engineers update.

Bounty Hunting/Combat: I jumped into an RES with my FDL, and I kind of knew what to expect, so I was careful on what I should attack. I still wasn't ready, though... Not even close. I picked on a wing of two, a Vulture, and a Diamondback Explorer. Waaait, is this real? Are these two ships REALLY maneuvering and trying their best to stay out of my firing arc while peppering me with bullets? NO WAY. I killed the diamondback, but by then, my shields were gone so I had to tuck my tail between my legs and RUN.

Whoa, I just had to run from an encounter. Back to station, take a very hard look at my setup, what can I change?

I go back, and pick on a Python. Same ship class, similar maneuverability. This time, I prevailed, however, that Python took my shields off and I was close to running again. Killing that one NPC gave me a sense of satisfaction I had not gotten from killing countless NPCs before. One dead NPC. One exhilarated pilot. "I won" I thought "I won! Holy crap!"

The core hasn't changed much. You kill, to get credits, to get better ships, and better loadouts. But this time, "better ships" is a relative term. Smaller ships are more maneuverable, but you can't afford to make mistakes when fighting a bigger ship. Big ships are slower, but pack more power. It is important to look at your loadout, and learn, learn, and learn until you figure out exactly what will work for you. Getting the biggest, baddest ship is now a distant goal, once that is less important than before. Finding the ship that serves your playstyle, equipping it properly, and most of all LEARNING TO FLY IT is the real goal now.

Smuggling/Pirating: Same as above.

Exploration: Wow, it looks like I might be able to reach that far off system I couldn't before. Well, there's a goal, I'm going to work with the Engineers and improve my ASP until I can make that jump, then perhaps, I will get lost in the black for a few weeks.
Missions: They haven't changed much, but it might be my imagination, but missions seem to pay a lot more than they used to. Waait, so I can actually choose to do missions now and actually make a decent amount of cash? Wow.

In short: The Engineers is a great addition to the game. You can now approach the game in different ways. Do you like a ship? Keep it. Instead of shooting for the next ship, why not enhance it? Why not use the Engineers to make your beloved ship what you want it to be?

Do you like combat? My, are you in for a treat. When was the last time an NPC made you feel as if you were almost fighting a human being? I don't know about most of you here, but part of the thrill of combat is the risk of losing, the risk that if you aren't good enough you will die. A thrill that was non-existent before, but oh, it is so real now.

So many people complaining on here, that got used to easy mode. Personally, all I have to say is: THANK YOU FRONTIER.

Thank you for making the game enjoyable, and taking the boredom away. Because Elite, as it was, was pretty much boring and way too easy.

I love it too.
For me speed is the answer. Lightweight iCourier with enhance performance thruster is a blast :D
Being able to really dogfight the Eagles and Vipers in an ice asteroid field is mindblowing.

And wher would be the fun if all player would already have maxed out their ships at the engineers after three days ??

I spend most of my time in my Corvette which I am slowing upgrading with the Engineers. Things are definitley more tricky now. My loadout has changed to accomodate gathering materials (limpets & cargo racks), also a wake scanner for the data. Every journey is a potential minefield as relentless bounty hunters (Elite Anacondas) are constantly inderdicting me for my bounties accrued thru undermining last week. Not to mention the powerplay ships popping up almost everywhere I go to try and take me down. I have had my butt handed to me on several occasions when the above mentioned ships have dropped into my instance whilst I was killing a mission target, or just trying to kill a ship for materials. Taking on more than 1 ship at a time is very hazardous, numerous times I have decided to wake out instead of suffering severe damage. My ship is slowly getting tougher & life is slightly easier with a few small upgrades, but this latest patch has certainly made Elite way more dangerous, and that has to be a good thing. So yeah OP, I agree with the general direction of your post and have some rep :)

OP +1 - I totally agree with the OP.

The game looks, sounds and plays better than ever. It got me from minute one and after i got shot down by an NPC i reckognized, that i now have to actually fight, when getting into combat situations. Nice!
The new mechanics get you much easier and deeper into the game while providing a bigger and more rewarding challenge. Excellent update and well thought through. Well done, kudos Frontier!

Cannot agree more here +1 rep.

So far 2.1 is a 9/10 for our player group. Stuff we really love :

  • Bounty hunting. I was not doing much fight anymore, as it was really boring. Now : you have to work for the kills, and if you bite more than you can chew...
  • Finding engineers and flying arround the bubble doing a bit of everything is a ton of fun now.
  • Scanning USS ! And wrecks USS being actually worthwhile.
  • The upgrades themselves : some seem focused on the tier 5 stuff, but if you look at it Tier3 upgrades are 1) very good already 2) much easier to craft. +25% jump range is nothing to sneer at.
  • Voices at the spaceports : just brilliant. If FD would add in pirate NPC's demands in audio that would be fantastic, as would be distress calls when flying close to a distress USS.

Athough Engineers are understandably top billing and getting a lot of attention, in the grand scheme of things they are just another cog in the Elite wheel. When more content comes and the game matures further it's entirely possible that they won't be seen in quite the same 'this is what I absolutely must do' way.

Engineers is only a grind if you make it so:

I am seeing a lot of complaints "OMG, what a grind to get materials to do the upgrades"

Guys, come on, Engineers is just an addition. It's not all-or-nothing content.

How about, doing what you were doing before Engineers? Engineers is NOT the game, it's just a part of it. If you choose to burn yourself out by trying to get the upgrades "RIGHT NOW" then that's your choice.

So I go fight in an RES. Been getting a lot better now, and wow, if I was to play 2.0 I could probably kill those NPCs just by looking at them now. I still have a lot to learn though. I decided to bring along a wake scanner and just a tad bit of cargo space (most materials, contrary to the complaints here, don't actually use cargo space... And guys, come on there is 600 slots for materials. What more do you want?)

From RES, I got a bunch of stuff. Scanning Wakes is easy, those things are all over the place whenever an NPC turns tail and runs. Materials are even easier. Killed an NPC? Collect anything it left behind. So I am still Bounty Hunting, and collecting materials on the side.

The new USS, wow... once again, what's this complaint about grind? If anything, USS are both more relevant now and easier to find what you need.

This is how it was in 2.0. "Find me three units of blah blah" you went out there, flew around in Supercruise until USS spawned.
Jump into USS #1: "Hi, I will buy your old tech at good prices" nope... try again
USS #2: "I'm totally going to own you, you are mine now" really? I ran from those NPCs because I couldn't be bothered to kill them (too easy and a waste of time).
USS #3: "I haven't written my bows, what should I do?"
USS #4: Finally, a wreck!!! But waaait... what I need is not here...

You get the point. Now? Scan the USS, and you can determine right away whether you should get in it or not...

I actually went material hunting, not because I like the grind, but because USS are quire fun now. Here are some screenshots of a nice site I found.

Sorry about the weird screenshots, this is directly from my HTC Vive HMD (yes, it looks this good, just a tad bit blurrier due to the filter. If you're curious about the settings I use, I'd be happy to tell you).

This poor sidewinder wasn't even blown up, his canopy was broken. The pilot probably choked to death. There were at least 3 more Sidewinders in this condition here, in addition to the wreck of a huge ship (couldn't tell what it was).

What's the story here? I assume a trader got attacked by a pack of pirates, and eventually got destroyed. But he gave them hell before dying! As testified by all these silent, almost intact ships floating among the wreckage... Must've been a good pilot too, to be able to take out their canopies!

So I gathered some materials, and left. I've been flying around, killing stuff, checking USS, and then I finally decided to take my ASP Explorer to have its FSD enhanced.

Oh my, what's this? I was able to get to level 3 crafting just from picking up stuff while doing the things I enjoy? The consensus from the instant gratification crowd seems to be that unless you don't grind, you won't get things fast enough.

I'd be willing to bet that some of those people torturing themselves with grinding still haven't gotten to where I am.

Only difference is, I had a blast doing it.

And ladies and gentlemen, Elite is not a grind. This is an unrelated game, but any of you played Final Fantasy XI Online and tried to get a Relic Weapon? THAT is a grind. Doing raids twice a week, it would still take you an approximate of three years (real life years) to get your hands on the weapon itself. (not the current version, but on release in 2004. It's a lot easier now... although it still takes time).

That's what I call a grind.

And the new air control audio is... phenomenal. Props to the audio team!

I mean seriously, I leave the station, deploy my weapons (lots of wakes to scan around stations), and the air control lady goes like "Commander, you are in a no fire zone, stow your weapons immediately." I was like "WHAAAT!!! Nice!"

Or the "Commander, please set your speed to one zero zero" when you are going a bit too fast inside the station...
