I add my friend but how do I message him?

press 2 to open the coms menu, press your action button when over their name and select either text or voice from the drop down list and hit action again.
his name will still appear if he is on your friends list but i think its dependent on previous communication having taken place. i often text between systems with a few people i've already spoken too.
An in game email system would be a good thing to have.
