Horizons I am a terrible smuggler

So I just unlocked the Dweller for contacting but I had two snafus... The first being I got to my destination only to find out I had purchased Reactive Armor instead of Personal Weapons and the second being I nearly got scanned on my way into the station. I'm never smuggling again. Every time I was Silent Running and in one instance fired off a heat sink out of panic. I am FAR better at staring down an A-rated Python and not sneaking materials through customs.

Use the Speed, Luke. Not silent running. :D

Use both silent running and speed if available. Although speed is asking for trouble if you are regular smuggler, NPC's are one thing, Cmdrs are even more unpredictable coming out of the mail slot whilst you are doing 3x the speed limit.

Hah! I just imagined two Clippers, both doing close to 600m/s, colliding in a mail slot. Talk about sonic booms. :D

I once hit a T9 at 750m/s in my Courier. I basically went through like a bullet. :x

Smuggling the easy way.

Go to a station with a black market.
Take a cargo mission with a faction you don't care about losing rep with.
Abandon the mission.
Sell the cargo to the black market.
Pay any fine they give you, it doesn't matter, all you want is the black market trade.

You can do it without even undocking.

Are you sure this still works? I don't think so. Mission fail fines are now level with the value of the cargo, mostly, plus you get less money on BM.

If you just want to trade with five black markets for the Dweller you don't have to worry about smuggling. Just buy one ton of the cheapest illegal goods available and fly to your destination station as normal. The fine will be tiny and being caught doesn't prevent you selling it to the black market.

If you only care about getting another BM credit for The Dweller Paying a bit more in fines than the cargo is worth on the BM should be no real biggie. Just don't take a cargo mission that has a big load of cargo. If I recall, you're going to have to shell out 50K before he'll talk to you anyway.

It worked when I had a mission fail on me for no reason about a month ago. At least I didn't have to dump the cargo so I managed to make a few credits back from it.

Wait'll the new patch goes live, smuggling is going to be transformed! When the patch goes live, the orientation of your destination space-station targeted in the left side of your HUD will match the relative orientation of the space-station to your ship. In other words, while still in supercruise, if you correctly orient your ship using the image in the left-hand HUD so that your ship is in front of and facing the mail-slot you will exit SC in front of and facing the mail-slot!

That's right, but they don't pay the fines. FD messed up on this one. They introduced the fines to stop the exploit, but they forgot that there is no incentive to pay them off. There's people flying around with accumulated fines of more than a billion. As long as they don't get blown up in the system that issued the fines, they never need to be paid.

Speed works - silent running has no affect on NPC's as far as I have seen.

There is the "eyeball" clause claimed by the devs, but I've yet to see the engineering mod that lets my eyeball scan a ship's status when it is too cold for my sensors to get a lock.

Z...

Don't fines turn into a bounty after a week?

Coming from someone who has smuggled hundreds of millions worth of cargo in everything from 400+M/S Cobras to 120 M/S freighters, I can assure you that silent running defintely works.

Line up for a smugglers run. 10 KM out directly in line with the mailslot. Works almost everytime.

Just follow this video guide and admit, I'm worse at smuggling than you.

I have to say that so far smuggling has been my favorite part of Elite. It really got my heart pumping and my palms sweating and it was great.

Yes, but so does not silent running. I've never used it, and never been scanned, just fly straight down the station's axis line into the slot at about 250 to 300M/S. No need to boost, just 4 pips to engines. They need to make it more difficult. It's too easy.

Yes, but so what? We all fly around with bounties on us. The bounty only lasts a week. You get a few extra interdictions. Big deal! The whole concept of fines and bounties is poorly though through. It needs a serious overhaul.
