I am (almost) outta here...........

So I have almost completed the build of my explorer. An Adder by the name Nathair (old Irish for Adder, or so I have been told). Before I leave though I have a few questions.
1) What is the percentage for the rebuy if I destroy my ship (I have not blown one up yet)?
2) is a 24Ly jump range sufficient for a trip to the core or should I tweak it to get more range?
3) If you use one what is the best logging tool you have tried (i.e. Captains Log, EDDiscovery or other)?

Also any tips, hints, wisdom or warnings regarding exploration also greatly appreciated.

May you get all your wishes but one, so that you will always have something to strive for!

Good luck out there, Commander :) Send postcards!
1) Standard insurance covers 95% of the ship cost - actual rebuy cost is shown on status page of HUD
2) 24 will get you there, but with some detours - if you can up it, do it :)
3) ... someone...? I'm not a logger ;)

If you're actually exploring, as against Buckyball Speed-running it, and not going to the absolute outer edge of the rim, 24 Ly's is enough. My Asp with 96 ton fuel tank and full weapons loadout only does 24 Ly's, and I've been there and now coming back.
Take your time, smell the roses, and remember, it's about the journey, not the destination.

1. The rebuy should be detailed on the right UI. Not much for an Adder.
2. 24Ly is plenty.
3. Pen and paper. You would be surprised what you can write down during "Frame shift drive charging"

Tips: always set your speed to zero during the FSD countdown.
Watch your fuel
When logging off I always speed away to the middle of nowhere. Never log off close to a planet, sun or orbit line.....they move.

For logging purposes I use three items, a screenshot of the object(s) in the system map, a notebook and pen, and excel. Make a workbook in advance and fill it in as you go or when you return and start compiling your data, go back to screenshots to double-check.

Small tips that may help:
  • If below or near 50% fuel capacity, double-check the next star in your route is scoopable. If not, redirect to nearest K,G,B,F,O,A or M-class. Use the view panel to customize which stellar objects to set as visible on the map.
  • If you want to go back, go back. Don't push yourself, if you have to push yourself you're probably not enjoying yourself anymore.
  • Have something interesting to strive towards if you're on a long haul. Meander a bit off course to check out a bright spot on the map to keep things fresh and interesting.
  • If you encounter close binaries, don't panic, trust your first judgement of how to escape and don't second guess before you're out. Stay calm, carry on, get clear, drop out of supercruise; then deal with any damage you may have suffered.
  • Share your finds with someone. Anyone really, as long as they're interested. Discussing things is revitalizing.

Fly safe and enjoy the Adder, it was my very first proper exploration ship.

Thanks for all the tips. I have tweaked my jump range to just a little over 27LY and am slowly making my way out of the bubble. I had no idea it was so large, it probably didn't help that I started from the far side of the bubble and have to cut through most of it. I cant wait to be out of inhabited space and actually start my exploration career. I hope to run into you intrepid explorers out there in the black.

Head straight up or straight down for a while and you'll be out of the bubble in no time.

Give you have no station to park up for the night, be careful where you park your ship. i.e. no logging out in a astroid fields or near planets/stars.
As you might find when you log in you looking at buy back insurance screen.

Personally I shop ship 100LY from any in system objects.

Well I have successfully jumped almost 1k LY from my start point (a system called Zeta Horologii). Thanks for the tip on setting the throttle to zero it saved my bacon. So far I have only discovered a water world (I have also discovered a few new systems containing a whole lot of icy, rocky, metal type worlds as well as many gas giants) but I will not stop until I at least get an ELW!!! I have decided against the SAG A run for now and will hopefully get a DBE when I return. Thanks again to all for the advice it has come in quite handy.

dont just note down the system names where interesting things are, also note the xyz co-ordinates too.

i still dont know if im tagged with an ELW in a COL SECTOR system because the stupid bug in the Galaxy Map search wont locate the system (even though iv got a piccy of the planet)

now i note the xyz as well as the name

I am exploring the COL Sector right now...... Thanks for the tip on the xyz co-ordinates I did not account for those yet (I have approx. 210 jumps at the moment). How does one find the xyz co-ordinates? Also for any one who is interested I have installed EDDiscovery. It is a good program for tracking your travels it gives you a place to track where you have been, how far the jumps are, a notes section for anything of interest you may find (and I do believe a section for the xyz co-ordinates). I am hoping to install and test out Captains Log as well and will report back with a quick review, although it does appear to have a pretty cool graphical interface.

In the galactic map, xzy coordinates can be seen in the plane you are zooming in or out over the galactic grid.

Thank you CMDR, I will begin adding these to my log! What tidbits of info do you guys record on your travels?

At the start of my exploration career, almost everything, except star type, number and positions of hmc's/metal richs/waterworlds/ELW/amonia worlds, gas giants, terraformables candidates, etc...sometimes also detailing atmosphere types or giants with water/amonia life and some pristine metallic rings.

Lately just main stars type if interesting enough, neutron/black hole/white dwarf/red giant/etc , number of metal rich planets, number of hmc's terraformables (also rocky ones but rarely scan them) and pertinent info of ELW/WW/Amonia Worlds, and when changing direction, position on the galactic map and distance to sol.

Wow, some of you take down a wealth of info. I am trying to be patient enough to scan the ammonia worlds, but alas I am on the hunt for an ELW and the itch to jump again when there is no ELW in the system is almost impossible not to scratch. I have discovered many gas giants, rocky worlds and icy worlds, only 1 WW. My largest system so far has been 60 objects (3 stars and a whole lot of gas giants and some icy planets. I must say though this is the best way I have spent my time in game so far.......

Just think of what the next jump can bring.......

ELW are really rare, haven't found one in the last two weeks, but the previous found 3 in a single day... I would advice not to stress out finding one, it will become tiresome at some point, instead choose a distant point to travel, enjoy your journey and I'm sure you will find some of your own at some point ;)
