I am confused about the unknown signal area's

How do you activate them? I will get out of warp speed right on top of them but never see anything. what are they for?

Do you mean the unidentified signal source that you see in supercruise?

If so, you need to target them for you nav computer, and you will be able to exit to them when close enough at low speed.

They don't have to be activated. When you actually drop there is rarely anything there. It may take a minute or so before other ships arrive. Things I have seen are:
  • A single pirate, such as War Essence. Beware of these, they can be deadly unless you are accomplished in combat.
  • Floating cargo canisters. You can scoop these, but they will register as stolen.
  • A mix of ships, including System Authority. I scan each and only attack those who are Wanted.
  • Just one Clean ship which jumps out, then leaves.
There may be other things which I haven't seen, Perhaps other players could post any oddities which have turned up.

This pretty much sums them in in my experience with the exception that some bulletin board mission will tell you to go and kill a named NPC and they will be found in unidentified signal sources. We will probably see more variety in Gamma.

I forgot about a couple of harmless weirdos who sometimes show up (both in Type 9s):
The Mineral Magpie who keeps sending messages about paying well for red crystals.
Technological Acquisitions Inc who offer to buy tech, no questions asked.

Don't know what they are about. They both show Clean, but maybe on the 21st I'll go find one and blow it away just because they are so annoying!

There are also clean ships (often paired with a system authority) that are bounty hunters. They'll KWS you and attack if you've got a bounty anywhere.

As they advertise, they buy their items of interest no questions asked (legal or stolen). If you have high tech items and you approach Technological Acquisitions Inc then they will buy the items from you at a better price than you would get selling them on the open market. Of course the chances of you actually carrying items they seek is pretty slim. I did have the correct items on one occasion though, the transfer is instant and happens whilst both ships are in full motion strange as that may be.

I came out of supercruise at a USS and there was an army plotting tactics about to attack something or someone.. like the commander was discussing tactics before the battle started. Only seen this once and also the game crashed, I did ticket it however because I could not rebuy old loadout.

There are Federal staging areas in iBootes. They have been readying their assault on Eranin for four months now...

in the original elite you could find alien artifacts at unidentified signal sources, i'm guessing if they're in this game they're either not in this part of the galaxy or are very rare
