Level one scans, level two scans, level three scans...

What's the difference and how do I do each level?

L1 - honk
L2 - point ship at planet and wait for time sink to expire
L3 - As per L2, but have a DSS equipped.

Probably, maybe, most of the time. Many people have dubious numbers in there suggesting that it has been buggy at least some of the time...

Wait... Will a level two reveal surface materials then?

I have over 170k L3 scans, allegedly. That's a lot of time pointing at planets...

Are you *sure* the honk is level 1?

I always assumed the passive "I'm within 10 ls of a body" was level 1, with level 2 being "body targetted" and level 3 "body targetted with DSS on board"

Err.....I'm not even seeing level 1 listed?

Neither do I - but I see something else, which is interesting. Did you cash in all/most of your explorations yet, or are you (still) out on a long trip (Beagle Point)?

If the former:

Those L3 scans seem to make a big difference in payout.

I'm still out.....about 29 kylies from Jaques. (which really means I've probably only moved about 12 from BP :()

What *I* find interesting is that rule of thumb 1,000 ish credits per lvl 3 seems to be the total for all exploration for both of us. Wonder about others?

Level 1 - 1/6 of the total credits
Level 2 - 3/6 of the total credits
Level 3 - 6/6 of the total credits
plus 50% bonus for first discovery.

so for a previously undiscovered Earth-like you're looking at;

about 10000 for the honk (level 1)
or
60000 for scanning with a DSS fitted (level 3) and then an extra 30000 for first discovery, a total of around 90000

So nine times higher for getting up close and personal.

Yes, level 1 are honks - they only reveal basic information about any astronomical body discovered, such as orbital parameters etc. Level 2 gives you more information, and level 3 gives the most as it involves using the DSS. I wonder if we'll get more levels when bodies with atmospheres become landable - a level 4 might involve a surface survey of life forms present on an ELW or something like that...

46,482,720 CR exploration profits and 5,398 Level 3 scans here. That's 9,000ish credits per lvl 3 so it doesn't hold. Or just adds further evidence to how utterly fubared the numbers are...

Can confirm. Right after these statistics were added to the UI, the displayed number was clearly bugged (my level 3 scans were '0' at that time, I think). So I wouldn't trust those numbers, at all.

After DWE it listen far too many lvl 3 scans for me. It added around 130,000.

Now I did a lot of scanning during DWE, but that would have meant I did a 1,000 each day on average.
