I am now officially part of the Asp club!

After plenty of time working my way up through credits, both as a trader and bounty hunter, I've finally been able to afford myself a sexy, new Asp! Never flown one before and it is the largest ship I have ever owned.

Absolutely adore the cockpit view, the engine noise and just the sheer amount of functionality it can bring to any one roll. Need a Trader? It's far bigger than the Cobra. Need an Explorer/Combat ship? It has enough room for both!

Did I mention the engine noise?

The only thing I would really ask is for some advice on where to find Class 5 and Class 6 modules. Credits aren't really too much of an issue and I certainly don't mind saving my pocket money for the very expensive Class 5/6 A-rated mods. I simply don't know where to find them.

Also, that engine noise is SUPER nice. It's the closest thing I've come to in-game that remotely sounds like my motorcycle and I love it!

Large population, hi-tech stations are your friend for outfitting, although not everything is available at every station, so you may have to shop around a little

Well done... I'm still very happy with my Cobra, but I have started "checking out people's Asps" with lustful thoughts. It won't be for a while, but I know what my next ship will be - assuming nothing extraordinary happens with the "other 15" in the near future.

Someone referred to the Asp as the angry bumblebee due to the engine noise, especially when the engine is struggling after a hard 180 pitch (very noticeable when you exit a station and throttle up while pitching to get away from masslock to warp out).

It's a nice ship... just be careful not to take hull damage since it's really expensive to repair.

As said high tech high pop systems

I am busy trading in mine with D rated modules and 120T storage, just another 17mil to make before I have enough for the jump from D to A rated bits throughout lol...you may want to hold off on many of the C/B rated modules as they add silly weight

ANd yes, the sound....the first thing that came to mind was my motorbikes too, specifically my 990 supermoto with aftermarkets on :)

Actually, I'm rather concerned about the cost to repair even superficial damage to the Asp. I'm terrified that the Python and Anaconda are going to bankrupt me if ever I get them and have the temerity to get into a fight where they get damaged at all. Or at least punish me by making me run trade for an hour or two in a Type 9 just to make some money.

Shoot, I got run into leaving a docking station by an apparently suicidal (or blind) npc in my Asp and got down to 82% hull and it dinged me for about 56,000 credits. Christ, I can only imagine what the repair bill would be if it were ever down to 10% or so. What would a Python or Asp cost? Sheesh.

I would like to know why Frontier chose to make repair costs this prohibitive to be honest. When you get a new ship, you should be able to fly the thing without having to worry about draining your reserves of credits simply because of odd damage here and there.

Congrats!
I've had my ASP for about 2 weeks now. Its a different beast indeed.. I have been earning enough in it as a space trucker for my Imperial clipper, but.. the more I fly the ASP the more im not certain I want to give it up :) Ive intentionally steered away from working on Empire Rep, just so i cant impulse and pull the trigger on the Clipper.. :)

As for the repairs.. i think that depends on what you do.. Ive spent probably close to a million on gas and repairs on my ASP.. but ive earned something like 40 Mill doing it.. 5k for gas at a station each time you land seems like a lot at first, but when you start making 500-1million cr for an hour work, it wont feel so bad..

However, I do agree.. going from a Cobra, or having the Option of flying a brick (type 6) and having as much cargo space for less then 1/2 the maint costs on the ASP is a little much.. i woudl love to see them drop Hull damage by at least 30% cost, and fuel by 20% or so.. i think that would be a better ratio..

you shouldnt have to take 3 days trading to earn enough credits just to go bounty hunting in a ship for a night just to pay for its fuel, and damage

Yay us! I just got mine yesterday. Damn engine and thrusters I want will cost more than the ship, but I've got it reasonably well fitted.

Now just make certain you're insured before you join that "other" club :p

Dig that. I've got about 5 million left over with a 700k rebuy. I'm a careful man.

i refit my Cobra for hauling. I cant make the cash to get an ASP from bounty hunting. Then when i get the ASP i dont know if i can continue b-hunting for upkeep of the ASP. Well see.

Congrats tho OP! :)

I got an Asp today as well. I've had fun flying it all day and I agree with the OP. The sounds it makes, the amazing cockpit, and the extra guns and externals/internals are amazing. It's a bit more expensive to outfit than the Type-6 but that's to be expected. For only 2-4m extra I have mine pretty outfitted.

Today I did combat and got 60k in bounties. No hull damage. Still ended up paying 40k for... wait for it... ship integrity! Hull damage for the Asp is infamous for being incredibly overexpensive. I REALLY hope Frontier becomes more forgiving when it comes to repairs, especially for higher ships. If our insurance is going to be stupid high, don't make our hull damage and ship integrity costs stupid high too. Combat in the Asp is fun but not very rewarding. Even if I hunted only Anacondas for 40k+ I'd make nowhere NEAR what I make in my Type-6 doing SAFE trading.

Trade runs are boring and make tons more money. This makes me wanna not fly an Asp at all because though combat and exploring can be fun, it makes no cash. Eventually I'll die and lose the 300k it'll cost to insure it. Again, 40k for ship integrity... haven't even gotten shields down yet and I'm still annoyed at Elite's ship costs.

I make maybe 400k an hour trading in my Type-6 with the help of Slopey's BPC tool. A bit less now that it doesn't have round trip as an option... even with a third-party tool I'm making nowhere near enough to sustain an Asp or get the ridiculous 17M to buy the Type-7 (to do more trading mind you). This game is quickly being a stats fest and trade game because trading is the only thing I can do to make enough cash to upgrade anything or make money. With the rising costs of Asp parts and new ships (the jump between Asp and Type-7) I can't do much but do boring trading.

Asp is great... but it's just an expensive (but badass) Cobra.

You can switch the Asp from trading to combat fairly easily depending on how extreme you want to go, I'm running in trading mode right now (mostly D rated) to collect for A rated upgrades....I sacrificed shields (dropped a class) to have 120T cargo space and am bringing in almost 200K per round trip of just a single 15ly jump each way.....it's paying for itself right now....

For combat though you really need a class 6 shield (bye bye to 64T cargo) and military bulkheads (lose some jump range due to weight)....

Oh, so you ride a Hyosung? My condolences :D
The Asp is a great ship. Not tried the new incarnation, only the Beta pre-release version and it was a HOOOOOOOOOOOT. Enjoy!!!!

I'm about 2 weeks off getting one. I have enough for the ship, just not enough spare for new parts, insurance and a cargo kitty.

I hear the repairs are expensive so be careful with your shiny new toy ;)

how are you getting 120 cargo? Im sitting at 96 and I dropped a class in shields as well?

It comes with class 6, im down to class 5.. so my cargo is 64+8+8+8+4+4.. or did you drop your shields two classes down to a class 3.. and then just picked up 64+32+8+8+4+4

Asp is the sweet spot bang for buck ship, and once you pimp it out I look forward to being interdicted and lighting them up with four beam lasers and two multi cannon.

It comes with class 5 shield, I downed it to class 3A, mostly only good enough for station / ship bumps etc, run if you get interdicted by anything Cobra or better IMHO, it's just not worth chancing it when you can boost and jump...remember you're a trader right now lol

Here's my setup (using this handy little website: http://eliteshipyard.nfshost.com ...just waiting to be able to save configs!)

Yes, but look how much you need to have the real deal combat vessel with scanners on the side:
