I am playing Elite Dangerous horizons in vr, epic version

and sometimes my mouse clicks me out of the game onto the computer desktop. Its incredibly annoying and frustrating and i dont know where to begin to fix this issue. Is it a bug? something in a windows setting?

example, i just started my game in elite and when i go in to fss, then use my mouse to click on a planet or point of interest, it kicks my mouse to desktop. the game is still there waiting for input, it did not crash or anything.

Does anyone know of a fix for this?

While it's showing ED your focus is obviously still on your desktop. Try playing with the screen options? Are you playing windowed, fullscreen, etc.

I use a tool called AHK joystick focus. It monitors your joystick inputs and focuses the game if focus is lost. It's similar to EDRunner, but that one stopped working for me at one point. For the FSS issue, I also sometimes click outside the game window when zooming, but I've found no other way than peeping under the set and moving the cursor back to the game window. Once you clicked into it, the game catches the cursor.

Go into the graphics setting and set the screen to FullScreen. This will stop your cursor clicking outside of the game window.

I had this all the time in VR. To max out my HMD performance I set my preview window on my desktop to 720p. However, if I click outside of the preview on my desktop, the focus goes to desktop and you have to click back in the preview window to return to the game.

To avoid this, make your preview window full screen. Then you can click outside of it (unless you have two or more screens).

I use ED Runner. Has other features as well, but most importantly it will focus the game window when you move your joystick. And you can set it to use TTS to announce that it has refocused the game window. It's not been updated for a while but it works great for me for the past 2 months I've been using it.

I didnt know you could change the preview window resolution. How do you change that setting without affecting the HMD?

it's the in-game resolution setting in the display options. It only affects the preview window, not the VR view. None of the display settings there have any impact on the VR view.
@ichaos43 This is a good tip if you want to reduce unnecessary load on your GPU. If in VR, who cares what on-screen quality is. Basically, reduce the on-screen resolution as low as possible which lets the HMD use those freed up resources. It isn't much at the end of the day, but some want the best possible experience on the VR side.

Yeah, i just have to say, I never thought about that being different. For some reason i just always assumed the in game graphics settings applied to the vr so i set them the highest i could because monkey brain over here thought it was going to my vr.

I usually run my desktop window at 720x480, but there is one issue you have to be aware of. The deskop window doesn't catch the mouse in some instances, which usually isn't a problem for me as I do everything with my HOTAS. The only exception is the FSS, which is a pain with the HOTAS, so I use the mouse. Moving the FSS cursor isn't an issue, clicking on something is - instead of zooming in on an object, I click outside the window and lose focus.

So far this only happens to me in the FSS, I think. Galaxy and system map are fine, as in on-foot gameplay. But in the FSS, I regularely lose focus, so when I know I am going to FSS a lot, I set my desktop window to borderless or fullscreen at the same resolution. Looks crap on the desktop, but who cares. In all other cases, I have it set to windowed and push it aside so it doesn't pop in front of my browser in my pinned desktop view.

I always have mine set to full screen. Because I am a keyboard and mouse player. However, i recently a few weeks ago decided to commit to getting used to the hotas. But i still keep it full screen because i hate when the mouse goes off screen when borderless or windowed

Yeah, it is only an issue with a windowed... er... window. But the way I get access to a browser or other tools - I use the deskop pin function of WMR - makes it a bit annoying when the fullscreen game window always pops in front and covers everything. And I have to have ED in focus or otherwise it doesn't react to my HOTAS. I use a compiled AHK script called AHK Joystick Focus for that as EDRunner has stopped working reliably for me.
