Unfortunately if the following thread is accurate the Elite exploration status has lost much of its value which is a shame.

If anyone wants to still achieve the "traditional" Elite rank, they can just get 156,500,000 in the "profits from exploration" stat in the right panel.

Its value is what you assign to it. Just because it can now be powerleveled even easier than it could be before doesn't mean that doing it by actually exploring is any less valuable.

While it's a shame that FDev decided to give people a quicker way to grind the rank way, thereby cheapening it a little, I'm not sure the damage is quite as extensive as you could grind it without really being an explorer, before. All you needed to do was get a ship with a long range, head straight for the neutron fields, spend some time farming neutron stars, head back home, sell, and never poke your nose out of the bubble again. So, for those really interested in exploration, nothing has changed, and for those that aren't but want elite status anyway, they can do it a bit faster now. So, while I would prefer the passenger mission expressway to elite to be gone, I'm not all that upset by it. I go to elite in trading by picking up a bunch of gems right after dangerous games, I've done almost none of the "normal trading yet I'm elite there. Even combat elite isn't that difficult to get, though it is more time consuming than the other two because it doesn't depend on credits earned through combat, but kills of high ranked enemies, so there's no shortcuts like you get with credits.

If you do passenger missions to gain tank "profits from exploration" remain unchanged so unless you have 161million or thereabouts then it's not from "exploration"
In either case a 52kly round trip to sag a for circa 60m still isn't a walk in the park, and they are few and far between unless you have put in the rank with minor factions etc, and then you need an asp to take the mission and if you want to stack them a beluga.. you can see where I'm going with this
So under the current system an elite explorer with over 161m profit is a "classic" elite while an elite with little profit is not j guess.. but it's still not an easy achievement to be sniffed at

Just a figure I remember having when I hit elite (I did say roughly), things change, you could also get elite from driving the circumference on a planet near beagle point a few times over.
You could also not scan one single planet and have 0 credits from exploration but be elite now
A set figure no longer exists but roughly 160m means you did it the "classic" (I scanned planets) method without any other influencing factors - not that it matters mind
