I am really getting sick of this

Ok, so, this is driving me insane. I bought a chaff lancher, have ammo, and enemies keep killing me like nothibg with crazy impossible shots. I don't see the chaff listed in my weapons, only is subsystems. What else is needed?
Also, war zones are pretty much impossible to play unless you have a cobra. Anything less and you're dead. Basically you always have 5 ships shooting at you, missiles and everything, while everyone else just circles around. I ran out of heat sinks in the first minute, and the defensive turret can't handle 6 missiles at a time.
And last, but not least, I can't make money using a viper. I made 5x more money using a hauler and moving stuff from place A to place B. Finding single targets is impossible to do, and killing npcs in general takes a long time without interdictions. Of course, going to the nav beacon and waiting 15 minutes for a single FD wake is boring as hell. Basically, pirating and merc work is boring/pointless unless you're on a cobra with a decent equipment.
Am I missing something? I know this is a Beta, but I'm kinda lost here, and bored to hell. I can't play online because my game crashes during hyperspace jumping, so... Please help me find sense in this!
And no, using the viper as a hauler is pointless because the money needed to add the cargo space and fuel load is ridiculous. I can only think of going back to a hauler and do dumb transport missions until I have at least 350k to buy a decent cobra.

You need to install better equipment. Hull upgrades will make your shields and hull stronger, thruster upgrades will make your ship faster and more maneuverable, power distribution improves the cooling of your weapons, affects systems etc.

I am using a Viper and I am making about 200-250K/hour without any trouble.

You'll often get single targets at a USS?

And which mission type do you focus more on?

I'm running around in a minorly upgraded Viper (i've spent around 80K in upgrades) and conflict zones are ok. It pays to pick your fights, if you didn't play late Alpha and Beta 1 then my advice is to lurk on the edge of conflicts, don't throw yourself into the middle of the melee and if you find yourself in the midst of a load of ships - get out and work the fringes again.

Situational awareness and knowing when to fight and when to run is key.

Interesting strategy. I'll try it, thanks! Also, what about the chaff launcher?

There are as many ways to play as there are players, just try different methods of doing each type of play until you find your click and do that.

Ok then seems like my message to the OP was deleted although i just answered one oh his/her question. But i should've explained mayself why i wrote that. So the reason is because he/she said there's no chance to do warzones with a smaller ship than a Cobra. That's not true , since many people doing them with only eagle or sidewinder. He/she require skills and experience and should be much more patient. I never meant to offend the OP.

Put the chaff launcher in a fire group?

I bought an eagle for a laugh (I found them disappointing in beta 1.9x) and turns out it's a great little ship in 2.4. One of the most agile in the game so far and it's easily upgraded it to a 6 unit cargo hold. There's a powerplant upgrade I'm chasing down at the moment. Can't get into the game right now, but that's another story (edit: no longer an issue, server swamping was the issue I think).

One of the first things I did in my eagle was to go out to a resource extraction site and just hang around with local security forces while they patrolled the asteroids. Once they start shooting at a pirate, I allow them to draw fire while I cling to the pirate's six and shoot holes in him until he pops. A 5-10min stint in the belt netted me about 15k and that was only maybe 3 or four ships worth. They were all cobras too, but like I said, if you just sit behind them you should be good. Be warned though, if one comes around to face you, be sure to boost on and get past it as fast as possible because they do sting the old shields a bit!

That's actually pretty smart! XD

I think you are right. The clue is you get the message 'You just bought a weapon that does not belong to a fire group. You can set the fire group in the right hand UI panel' straight after you buy it.

But the OP is right, it doesn't appear there. You get the same message with the heat sink launcher but that does appear in the fire group menu.

I tried buying two, selling the other things that did appear in the menu, quitting and restarting. It doesn't appear for me. So I guess it's a bug. That's what we are here for. I'll report it even though someone must of already spotted it.

Edit - because accidentally tripped up the rude word filter.

Thanks, that clears it up. Now that I know it's a bug, I feel a lot better. Plus, all the good advice has been really helpful!
