So, i bought Elite: Dangerous few days ago on Steam and today i hear that i have to buy Horizons in order to play expansion when "new players" just need to buy Horizons and they get vanilla game for.. FREE?!
Are you serious Frontier, you think this is fair?

Sorry to hear that. Sure it was stated before, but you didn't have to know that anyway.

I would try to ask for the refund anyway, the 2 hours limitation only applies for the automatic refunds, so if you explain your situation there's a (little) chance that the steam support people might give you the refund anyway.

If not, just keep playing the game and wait till season 3, which I'm sure will include the first two seasons.
It sucks, but it's nothing more than everyone already did: spending a whole year with the first season ;)

Send in a ticket to support and try your luck. They might have some sympathy for you (you never know).

I've found customer service in this game really good although with the release just having happened might take a while 2 get a response

I wonder why the OP did not check the ED site before he did that purchase.
i wonder why he did not use the search function in forums.
I wonder why he didnt buy it at the black friday sale for way less.

I wonder the most why Frontier should be blamed because its his own fault.
I guess some ppl need to learn the hard or expensive way.

A week ago F D gave all horizons pre-order purchasers free access to E D 1.4 - so it is worth you contacting Support at F D and asking if there is anything they can do to mitigate the cost for you. It can't hurt to ask.

"I bought this iPhone 6 a few days ago and now Apple released the iPhone 6s for the same price!!! Are you serious Apple, you think this is fair?"

Don't think it works like that. If he bought it a few weeks ago, and Horizon was available for pre-purchase, then he got screwed. Elite Dangerous should have been removed from steam, when Horizon was available for pre-purchase, since it does come with Elite Dangerous from my understanding. Shady business.

Don't think it works like that, say the 6s has come out, but this store doesn't have the 6s in stock yet, and sells the 6 at full price. Uninformed customer walks in without doing research and drops cash on the 6. Why should a store remove perfectly functional merch? That's pretty much what happened here - always do your research before buying something.
I'm still sympathetic to op though, ask steam for a refund, or frontier for an upgrade.

I knew this would happen. I told as many of my Steam friends not to buy in case they were interest during the last sale as Horizons was around the corner.

If the OP bought the previous version at full price, than of course it's going to sting. New players on Steam aren't going to always be as aware as the regulars int he community about the pricing model. They'll assume that any expansion is a cheaper addon to the base product, like most other games. I was confused mysefl until I did a lot of reading. This isn't being communicated clearly by Frontier outside of this commuinity and I wouldn't be surprised to see more such complaints.

Only if you haven't played more than ... 2 hours I think? And it has to be within a week or something. It's not as unconditional as they made it sound.

Played less than 2 hours and it is two weeks. I don't recall them claiming it was unconditional. All refund policies have some basic conditions to prevent abuse. On Steam, there are many games that are short and could be played within a few hours, so it's a hard balance to strike. The fact that after over a decade they finally gave us a refund facility is a relief in itself as previously all sales barring pre-orders were final.

It sounds as fair as any other game or product on the market. Do your research first.

Not really other games tend to get heavily discounted before release, although there was a recent sale in ED if you paid 45 dollars recently for ED that was a bad deal.

OP I feel your pain, if however you could let this pass as an unlucky bad deal as the game is still very good and there is plenty to do without horizons and just buy into next years upgrade.

Hardware products are also normally heavily discounted if a new release is around the corner.
Sometimes the customer is right when they have a complaint.
