Newcomer / Intro I bought my first combat ship - Viper - Outfitting question

The weapons are very much a personnel choice but I like the balance of lasers and bullets. Lasers for shield stripping and then bullets for hull destroying. One thing I would say is you might want to get a kill warrant scanner to maximise your earnings.

Oooh Fixed Lasers, who's a hot shot then ? ;)

I am sure you have 3A Shields and Power Dist on your immediate todo list, but KWS might be a better first purchase.
Never keen on Hull Reinforcment, if dropping that allows you something else, then do it.

I'm by no means an expert, but I'd make a few tweaks: I'd boost up your power distributor and your shield generator to an A-Class if possible and get yourself some military grade hull plating. In terms of exceeding your power draw (which these upgrades will); try to learn to juggle your systems. For example:

Boosting up your Shield Generator and Power Distributor would exceed your power capacity with your hardpoints deployed. However, you disable your cargo hatch and set your frame shift drive to a lower priority than everything else. This means when you deploy your hardpoints your FSD goes offline. This is fine, because you can't cruise or jump with hardpoints deployed anyway. Once you've finished combat, retract hardpoints and your FSD comes back online.

When I build a ship in EDShipyard, I always choose my frame shift drive and fuel scoop first, then un-tick their power box, a long with the cargo hatch power box. That way I get an accurate view of my ship's power requirements in combat.

Hope this helps, good hunting!

Here is (if I can remember rightly) my old Viper Loadout.

Obviously it's about a million credits more expensive than yours, but your can reduce things such as the thrusters can drop to a B, you don't need 3A sensors, you don't need anywhere near an A FSD for a combat ship, you don't need a fuel scoop etc.

Without disabling the cargo hatch, FSD and fuel scoop it will read like it exceeds the power plant.

SteveBawn.jpgtnx all, did some changes to layout, but not all parts were available in station.

I took down, what I think was a huge ship.. lol.. Not sure it was smart tho since now i see it was federation ship?
And the Shield cell boosters.. Is it when my shield is as low as now I should use it?

Wasnt sure how it worked so i waited too long until i lost shield completely i think.
I recorded the fight, so if anyone wanna see and give pointers of how to improve, I can put it on youtube. Was my first "fight" with something bigger than 2k bounties

With 2 npcs fighting me i left with just 1% hull dmg after they were dead.
Claimed a nice 84k bounty ( yeah i know, no KWS)

Dropships are pretty big and tough, but not normally particularly dangerous. Not enough weapons and too slow.

Shield Cells take a long time to activate (5 secs or something?), and if your shields are down, they do nothing.
I tend to trigger one when my middle ring starts to change colour

Here is the full fight :)
I see there are lot to learn in order to become a better fighter tho lol.. Im still a noob, thats why I post in this section :)

Congrats on your first bounty kill cmdr.
Why didn't you target his subsystem (powerplant) ? That would have improved the time spend on this kill by at least 50% I think.... And as you mentioned earlier you should have used your shield cell much sooner like ca 1:25 into this clip.... ;)

anyway you'll improve on your next target I think... Keep up the good work cmdr :)

He was targeting engines in the too pic, which is a good second choice. Can't see the video, but from the damage proportion on the pic, I would suspect that gimbled lasers would probably be better.

In the video he only used subsystems at the end where the hull is down to like 24-25% and imo he could just as easiely had done that before he even fire the first shot.... No need to do much damage to the hull when your objective is to destroy the target....

Yeah since im new to the whole combat idea i totaly forgot about subsystems and read somewhere that drive is nice to attack so they cant flee. .
I go for powerplant in the future :)

The canon is for hull/subsystems just like the multicanons and missiles and the diferent kinds of lasers are for shields....

Personally, I ran class 2 multicannons and class 1 lasers on mine. I started with gimballed pulse lasers and eventually upgraded to gimballed beams. I never experimented with fixed weapons on the Viper (though I now run two fixed pulse lasers on my Vulture) but it looks to me like the Viper's class 1 hardpoints are close enough together that fixed weapons would work well there. The class two hardpoints are more widely spaced.

Fixed weapons work really Well in the Viper. It has possibly the best hardpoint placement in the game (I like the Asp's placement more, but it isn't really a combat ship, IMO, certainly not for PvP.

Fixed weapons are really effective against the big ships, especially their shields, but when you're engaging small ships or trying to hit a subsystem, they're much less so. Gimballed weapons deliver less damage per shot, but the gimballing more than makes up for that in terms of the amount of time you can actually fire on the target.
