Well done mate...Think i'll get creds by destroying pirates if I can...Successfully docked first time round yesterday too 
Have to admit, that's quite a haul with only 4 tones of cargo space. Well done.

Ya trading in this game seems a bit far-fetched for a small time pilot in a sidewinder with only 4 cargo slots.

It's a slippery slope though, and although you can make good money from honest work, it can all be thrown away in an instant. It makes your accomplishments in this area all the more impressive!
Until you crash once more....and you start doubting yourself again!
First few times I docked I did it without trouble. Then I crashed in spectacular style. Now each dock is undertaken with concentration and a little bead of sweat on the forehead.
Like Earth-bound pilots I figure that any landing I can walk away from - and trade - is a good one!
But yeah, it's quite a feeling to swoop through the air lock at speed, swoosh down to your pad and halt in one smooth movement, then vertical thrust your way down to the actual landing.
I consider docking at speed is the only way to beat AI Landing Pad changes and it sure makes trade runs fun.
Shields to 4, engines to 2.
If you hit anything, press X immediately! You will stabilize straight away, and not shred your shield
and vert/horz thrusters are certainly your friend for landing, but nose down and swoop in, hit X to kill engines and just glide on into it. (always have finger ready to thrust up and away if you happen to have over shot it lol... will save you a LOT).
Selling stuff is just a matter of taking high stock items to the logical location. Check your star map for indicators.

Personally If I'm not making +20% on my investment, AND spending 75% of my investment on each run, I think it's balls. And I'm at that point with 12K in bank where the items simply aren't expensive enough to continue to trade at that rate.
Regardless, I didn't do it for the money. I did it because I got sick of crashing on docking and needed to learn how to accomplish this

You just know the devs are going to decrease the station entrance size slightly after this post.
