I can't afford all of this

I got TrackIR, but my spouse does not, so we're getting a EDTracker too (pre-built since we have not the tools; £25 + p&p).

Thanks for ALL the great input everyone! Harmless I couldn't get the EDtracker website to load :( Maybe their server is down.

@natte hond thanks for the 'heads up' on VoiceAttack. Watched this YT video and was amazed at how much coolness you get for $8!

Okay for now I'll stick with my XBOX controller. At least that way I can feel better about dropping $125 on ED.

I certainly wouldn't spend a lot of money on peripherals just to play this one game. Just in case you end up not liking it.

HOTAS is superb if your used to it. I came from 9 months of War Thunder and fell into ED instantly. It's great to have twist rudder and pitch and roll on the stick, thrust latteral thrusters on the hat and analog thumbstick part of the throttle. Energy management on one hat, targeting on the other plus the hats switching to ship computer screen navigation when looking at one of the screens.

With the head tracking and possibly voice commands. It's extremely immersive. Head tracking is not like looking around with the hat switch. The hat switch resets when you let go, with head tracking it is as natural as looking yourself, you can follow your target while controlling the ship and always have the target focused in view. Much easier to get your bearings when your looking with your head, and better then the scanner, especially up close.

But you should try things as you need them if your new to this kind of simulation gaming. It takes time and practice to master many of these things.

One thing funny, going back to war thunder and WWII planes, I keep trying to use my lateral thrusters lol.
