I cant find planets while exploreing?

I have an Diamondback Explorer. I have an Advanced Discovery Scanner and a Detailed Surface Scanner. I have an A class scnsor. I have traveled all the way to Orion and all I find is stars. 1500ly and no planets? What am I doing wrong? I is so pretty out here!!!

This might sound silly but... are you actually HONKING your horn in new systems? I mean, you're not assuming it's automatic, are you?

Yeah make sure you honk or all you will do is see the stars

Yep...you must honk first with the advanced discovery scanner. That will reveal all of the bodies in that system. Then you can decide which ones you want to scan in detail.

What the three gentlemen before me are saying is: You have to bind your scanner to a fire button.

Go into "Fire Groups" in your right-hand panel and assign the Advanced Discovery Scanner to your primary or secondary fire button. The use it ("honk") when you enter a new system to discover the planets.
Once you've discovered the planets, you can decide which of them (if any) to approach to scan. The rewards for detailed scans are listed on the wiki.

Once you have honked, as described above, go to the System Map (below Galaxy Map in the left hand panel) and select a planet (or moon or star). Supercruise towards your chosen planet. You need to be pointing directly at your targetted planet and fairly close - the scan distance depends on the size of the planet.
There are some good exploration instruction videos on youtube. Look for Obsidian Ant, he describes it well.

L O L . so you can afford Advanced D Scanner , etc. Dback explorer ? and you cant find PLANETS? Some stars dont have them. You must of played the game some what to have this equipment. Starting areas should have system planets mapped already. You can find stations to do BulBoard missions? or traded ? or cashed in bounties no? So you havent used a Discovery Scanner yet? im just shocked.

Yes, it is easy to forget the social niceties when you've been out in the void so long
