I can't see ED being successful on consoles

greetings...

might be a rather odd way for a first post... but I've been lurking here for some time since started playing the game several months ago... so recently I upgraded my control peripheral from a joystick to a proper hotas and this got me thinking, my hotas which is an x-55 btw, it's buttons and axis are almost fully used for most essential key bindings; so I looked at my xbone gamepad and thought : hoow are they gonna play this game on consoles? gamepad is simply lacking enough buttons for this kind of space/flight vehicle simulator games... for comparison example, I'm using my main throttle's axis and the top 2-way rotary axis on that throttle for the ship main throttle and forward+backward thrusters, which are quite essential for 6 dof movement... now on a gamepad, I'd need 4... four separate buttons just to accommodate that! so as you can see, gamepad users are running out of buttons faster than Elite pilots running from Thargoids :D how are console players going to do combat then? things like shield cell and chaff are probably can only be mapped into gamepad while sacrificing others, possibly just as essentials keybindings for operating the ship... that would seriously limit the experience and skills for them.

furthermore, with the ever improving minions by sarah jane, I can see that console players are going to in for nasty nightmares there  unless FD decided to dumbed it down ;) but as it is now, probably most of them who never into space sim before (which is quite a large majority of the console player base) will simply rage quit in the 1st hour of ED combat (if not for other reasons :D)

so what is your thoughts here?

is there anyone who play ED with gamepad here? can you share your experiences? are you sticking to gamepad or not?

I know 5 players who use an xbox controller to play the game.
They prefer it over the keyboard and mouse.

I'm not worried, it's a good game. It won't sell like Call of Duty, but I'm sure it will perform well enough to justify the investment for FD, and increase the fanbase.

I have tried many controllers. My X-55 is favorite, at the moment I am using kb/mouse while travelling. I really tried with xbox controller but it is just useless. I don't know how people use it but I guess it is a personal thing. The last time I tried the xbox controller was in beta though and the flying does feel to have changed a lot since then. Might give it another go. I still have the kontrolfreek extensions from last time I tried. They do help.

I use a mixture of XBox controller and keyboard, I just can't be bothered to learn the combinations of button presses that would give me access to all the controls I need.

Gamepad works fine, I have everything I need on it - expect the Alphabet for typing of course. Its not like you can only give a button one function, you can give them multiple ones. Its at least for me far better to play ED then M+K, but that is of course just preference.

It is also my very first Space Sim - I didn't rage quite ^^

I think voice command will take on a whole new level of awesome for the consoles.

I kinda agree with the OP but I think our console "friends" will overcome the problems.

Never had a console - they're toys for little boys.:p

Indeed.

Can you attach a keyboard to a console?

But a X-box 360 controller is far more comfortable than K&M, especially if you're exploring the galaxy on a 40" screen that is in front of your lounge sofa. But if you seriously want to play ED without pain in the back than a HOTAS is the best choice in my opinion.

I play on console controller, but I still need the m+kb in arms reach. It will take some major juggling.

I hear alot of people say that they have to dumb down the console versions for the console kids and this talk, having been on both sides of the fence I would say its the PC community that are a long way worse.. its been rather embarrassing from a PC point of view. I fear the console community will really show us up for being right spoilt brats who need everything handed on a plate.

I fly with gamepad (no need for flightstick precision as the ships are slow) and use my keyboard/mouse as auxiliary controls. Same is possible on the consoles.

Consoles have been great in the late 70ies through mid 90ies, I can't see a reason to use them now (except for niche applications such as Rockband), as PC gaming emerged since then. But on the other hand, E:D doesn't make use of the usual multi-screen PC environment as well as superior CPU/GPU power and RAM, so it's one of the games that can be played on a console without much impact.

The bit i highlighted is a very personal thing that differs from person to person.

I find sitting with a keyboard under my left hand and mouse in my right WAY more comfortable than the claw like grasp i need to adopt for a controller.

And as for sitting on the sofa in front of the TV, i hope the steam link which is due at the end of the year is good!

I know i plan on getting one just for when i want to sit in front of the TV on the comfy sofa :)

I use a ps3 controller and have done since Alpha.. I don't have a problem in dealing with anyone or anything the game has to throw at me ;)

Define 'success' - there's lot of things required for it to have good sales on consoles. However FD is best positioned for deliver on this. If you are talk about controls - it's doable. If you talk about making game more accessible to casual crowd - yes, they have additional work to do.

It will be interesting nevertheless to see results of the port. Wishing good profit from console sales to FD.

I think it works well on xbox. I do rather worry about graphics details and the targeted audience on that system.

I never understand why people think the game is going to be dumbed down over a controller type. You can connect a keyboard to an Xbone, and the controller to a PC.

As a mouse and keyboard player (and being a programmer, a heavy keyboard user), I sometimes relieve my arms and hands by using a wireless PSIII controller. The game is perfectly configurable for - and playable with these controllers.
