I can't wait for 3.0 to drop because my "other" game has messed up my brain...

TL;DR - Play PUBG for a few rounds, then immediately play Elite Dangerous. The stress reduction is actually quite jarring.

So, I've been playing PUBG very steadily while waiting for 3.0 to drop. For those who don't know it, it's a last-man-standing, battle royale game. It's actually pretty great but completely different from Elite. You're hunted and hunting up to 99 other players on a massive island for the entire 25 minute duration of a round, with a circle of death always closing in, steadily squeezing everyone together. It's awesome, but it requires intense concentration and constant vigilance.

Then I decided to get back into Elite and move my ships in preparation for 3.0. At first I was like, "is there a player over there...maybe there...OK, he's definitely there! Wait, no one's trying to kill me while I'm cruising to Asterope? How very strange!" I'm really not making this up; playing Elite after several rounds of PUBG is a very relaxing mental vacation.

I just don't 'get' PUBG: average graphics and the usual FPS CoD style PVP. What makes it so popular?

It is GTAV with sniping at country side basically.

It's mechanics feel jarring to me but I guess it can be tons of fun if you play with friends (similar to GTAV). It feels like extension games kids play with cops and robbers.

It looks pretty good fun. But I just don't see what has made it so massively successful.

99 people in one instance is cool, and while the graphics are basic, graphics aren't the point; the stalking and being hunted is the reason. And the "death cam" is a nice feature that Elite should consider adding; you see how your opponent went about getting you, from his POV. Tres awesome.

Kinda random equipment and spawn while giving the players some agency about it. Each player chooses where to drop. Equipment spawns somewhat randomly. Map size contracts periodically so in the end it`s going to be a showdown without the camping stuff. The key point is that everything is mixed up next match, you don't start at the same place with the same equipment all the time.

It's infested with grey market loot drop economy, though. Wouldn't touch it with a long pole.

PUBG is a weird game. I played it for about 20 minutes before getting bored. :|

Let's hope the update process shall go well, then. :)

Its the balance between fps (a traditional blockbuster genre) with mild survival: death means more than with cod or some such, making the games more tense and succes more rewarding.

I remember feeling like that in EVE, spend lots of time in W-space or null sec and you become almost paranoid. Heading back into High sec was a real test of your nerves :)
