I can’t work out how to use airlocks

There’s no in-game explanation and my fiddling with it is getting me nowhere. Do I have to place all the barriers first to have my track be able to go through the airlock gates?

I opened the help page and the airlock description is as follows: “Used by transport rides. A track is required inside the habitat.”

Not the most helpful page XD

Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

I only messed a bit with the 4x4 ride in the Beta. The tracks have to cross the gates at a 90 degree angle. If the last track piece is slightly bent, you can’t place it.

I'm writing this in case anyone finds this thread looking for a solution to the problem of track on one/both sides of an airlock being obstructed for no apparent reason. I spent fifteen minutes or more fighting with this. Deleted everything, smoothed everything to foundation and rebuilt, same problem. Eventually discovered two solutions.

First, the terrain has to be smoothed to foundation for a much wider distance around the track/airlock than seems intuitive (and, be warned, its even wider for stations).

Second, and this is the one that really solved it for me- the other sections of barrier either side of the airlock seem to cause an obstruction. Soon as you delete them, no problem building the track. I recommend placing the airlock before any other section of barrier, or at least with a large-enough gap in the barriers on either side, building the track and then building the rest of the barrier as you normally would. Seems to work for me.

Hope this saves someone some trouble, and keep building!
