Astronomy / Space I claim the moon

Apologies if this was posted before ...

"Legislation introduced into the United States Congress on 8 July 2013, designates the Apollo landing sites and US equipment on the Moon as a United States National Park, under the jurisdiction of the US Department of the Interior."

They can't do that! That's like inviting an American into your house 45 years ago and the US declaring your lounge a national park.

It's like the Dutch claiming Australia now because they saw us in 1606, and did nothing about it until now - not sure that I want to wear clogs :(

I have no problems with them claiming land on the moon, actually I think they should! What's the incentive for colonizing space if your not allowed to claim land or resources? If we ever want to get of this rock we really need to get rid of those "laws" that prevent these things. Then, corporations and countries might start to compete for real again!

I have no complaint about them claiming land, just that if they want to claim it they should get up there and claim it and use it rather that say "here is some paper that says that bit of moon is ours and we don't care what anyone else thinks".

To be fair, they actually did get up there and still have property standing on the land they are claiming. ;)

True, but it's been quite a while since their last visit. It looks very dusty up there. Look at those footprints! They haven't even sent a cleaner! ;)

I'm certainly by no means an Anarcho-capitalist, but I agree with the sentiment that if America isn't doing anything to put lunar real-estate to good use, they should allow others to set up shop and do so if they can afford to and want to.

Although perhaps the Sea of Tranquility can be considered an International Park (not a National Park, as it would unequivocally belong to the USA which I don't think is right for territory that is off Earth) that is free to visit by all of humanity.

Don't Americans like to say "Possession is 9/10ths of the law"? Don't see much possessing happening at the moment.

British law, from what I remember for 20 odd years go while attached to the Military Police, described it as possession is 9 parts of the law. The difference? No idea, other than there are more than 10 parts describing possession.. :)

As far as I remember it used to be the case in British law, though I'm not sure it still is, that if you occupied some land (maybe put up some fencing to mark it) and could prove that you had occupied the land for 12 years without anyone else claiming it then it became your property.

My wife bought her brother a piece of land on the moon as an xmas present. Dunno how that works out though... :S
Maybe Tiny Clanger making some money on the side...

You've been had ... no one individual or nation can own the Moon. It belongs to nobody.

Otherwise I claim the whole universe.
