I couldn't resist buying a FGS

and holy poop that thing obliterates everything. 1 large and 2 medium fixed pulse on the bottom. 2 medium and 2 small gimballed multi's. The kill time is a lot lot quicker than my FAS (2 large fixed burst and 2 medium gimballed multis), yes the maneuverability is an issue (which is funny because in SC its the most manouverable ship I have used) but it is now going to be my FAOFF training ship.

Why so must negativity about it?

Yeah, its mental in SC. Try interdicting someone! Also, if you do 'cut the wire' missions try dumbfires on the small hardpoints. I did four yesterday without reloading, and it takes 10-15 seconds from exiting glide.

The FGS is a beast!

I don't know about negativity but I think that most players prefer the manoeuvrability of the FAS to the FGS. I'm not one of them, FGS is hands down my favourite combat ship, if you are competent with FA off switching, the manoeuvrability isn't an issue and its as hard as nails

Yes, I have found the role for the FGS, its a pure surface attacker.. But I have loaded every single hard point, except the 2 smalls, with dumbfire missiles. One volley takes out any settlement orbital cannon, and I just placed 2 fixed small beams lasers to take out all the smaller stuff.. I also loaded it up with point defense against goliath missiles and can comfortably attack a large high security outpost with ease.

I am currently putting together a video for surface attack, I think its gonna be a good one. Loving the FGS in this role.

I have had one sitting in dock since it was released. Never had much use for it, can you post your loadout.

@Vindicator - Sounds like a good plan :)

If you are a casual player you will find the FAS so much easier in combat as it more or less goes where you point it and it will take out smaller enemy ships in seconds.

So the FAS is what I recommend for pure combat but anything can be used if you know how to manhandle it. ;)

I'm considering getting one to replace my PA-Tank FAS. From my workings, the following will out-gun the 2xL and 2xM PAs on the FAS by quite a bit, with the two small slots for some dumbfire goodness:-

Has anyone tried a similar config? My only concern is heat, as my PA-Tank FAS can get hot very quickly, so I run it with 4 x Heatsinks, and I suspect this will run even hotter on firing all five PAs.

Thermal load workings:-

2 x Large PAs + 2 x Medium PAs = 36 (toasty)
1 x Large PA + 4 x Medium PAs = 49 (too toasty?)

I sold mine to get the FAS - which was just a better match for what I need(ed) - a Vulture+.
I will relook at the FGS when the fighters come out, as I liked it - it just overkill for what I needed and the maneuverability verses costs made me a tad worried with my rubbish skills.

Simon
Once it gets its fighter bay, it will be even more awesome!

I run both a FAS and FGS with 2med 1 large PA on one fire group and i have to say the fgs runs a lot cooler when firing. The FAS i find myself using heatsinks, the FGS however i have rarely had to use one even while also running beam turrets. Not sure how it will cope with 5 though.

If you are co.fortable aiming off centre try the large and then two meds on the same side for awesome convergence.

The FGS is an absolute beast when it comes to burst damage, i run 3pas 2rails and 2 beam turrets(for eagles) on mine.

I'm curious about the FGS. From what I have read it is a combat oriented ship - strafing bomber type rather than agile ship superiority judging by its manouverability rating - but is it any good as a (well armed) trader/smuggler ship or as a general multirole ship?

Ooh, even more so than the FAS?

A lot more. More so than the Vulture. To the point where I wonder if someone put the wrong number in during coding

I guess you could fit a cargo rack in a size 6 bay, jump range is poor as its a combat ship so you would need a good scoop. Speed is poor but you can destroy any authority before 'Scan Detected' has reduced size and moved to the top right :D

I'm currently doing Federal missions and am one rank away from the FGS so glad to hear some positivity here!

I have been humming and haring since I got my rank last month, due to negative feedback (except from a few), but thought to hell with it and I'm glad I did

Thanks for the info. Definitely more smuggler potential than trading in that case since it has few internal compartments. That Viper-esque jump range would be a bit of a problem though. I've seen an NPC doing some minning in a FGS but minning's not my thing unfortunately.

The way you described it, It would make for a hilarious smuggler vessel :D

*FGS supercruises in. Authority vessels implode at the mere sight of the FGS*

"Attention puny station. I am smuggling illegal goods! There's nothing you can do about it so let's just all avoid the awkward stares as I dock. Everybody got that!?"

*All ships in the vicinity nod with their noses*
