I do love having extra ships, but the Mamba and Phantom I'm not seeing justification for

I've been spending some time with the Mamba, and Krait Phantom. Today I sold the Phantom to get my Krait MKII back, while the Mamba seems to behave as more of a gimped FDL, but at more of a cost...but boy is she pretty, and that cockpit design? Lovely...but I just don't see the point. Why spend more for a Mamba? Aside from aesthetics the FDL is the clear choice.

My main issue is with the Krait - Phantom. Previously I had been using the MKII variant and the two are not different enough to warrant losing the extra hull strength, extra large point, ship launch fighter, and ever so slightly shield strength. In my opinion? If you're going to have a Krait that loses the SLF ability, at least increase its maneuverability by one mark. Instead, both are roughly the same speed, with the Phantom being slower on speed, but slightly faster on boost, and the MKII is faster on speed, but slightly slower on boost.
Hopefully the dials will be turned, and some adjustments made. I would love any reason to keep my gorgeous Mamba.

Oh and let's be honest, the Krait MKII boost sounds a beast...not sure why the Phantom got the short end of the stick there.

Didn't care much for the Mamba, but it did get me back into an FDL I'd long since abandoned, and been having fun with it.

I've barely touched my MKII since buying the Phantom. On paper the Phantom and MKII look hardly different like you say, but the loss in defenses with the Phantom are outweighed by better performance for me, and with both of them easily perma-boosting with low pips I give the Phantom a hands down win for when speed is needed. I'd take my Phantom any day for combat. It just handles noticeably better, maybe it's my build/weight or the horizontal thrusters, not sure, but I can stay glued to a target in the Phantom, and that time on target means faster kills even with one less large hardpoint (I don't use SLF, big caveat I realize) and less catching bullets. Phantom for exploration is pretty much perfect for me too.

That's interesting you say that, regarding the Phantom. Since getting the MKII back I've been feeling like it handles better than my Phantom did, and all I did was transfer everything over. The MKII feels slightly more sensitive to the stick when nudging in either direction, on any axis, and I can't figure it out. It's a slightly heavier ship. It's using the same dirty drag drives I had in the Phantom. The Phantom should have a four-mark rating for maneuverability, given it sheds more mass than vs the MKII. And having that SLF for added distraction means I don't need to rely on my shielding as much.

The justification for the Mamba is that it looks great as a hanger decoration and makes a good stealth bomber.

That's about it as far as I can tell.

So the Phantom is being touted as the "ASP KILLA" (no one is saying that i just made it up) No but seriously on paper its on par for exploration with the asp.
Its also quite a BEAST in combat even PvP! and its the kraitist looking krait...to me anyways.I use my Phantom for Combat PvE and PvP (twin SRB pa and some rail guns its mean and the shields are nice! tho the hull is meh)
Its fixed placement is okay. But its kinda far apart feeling so small ships I have to get range to hit them. Did I mention its pretty quick? yeah it is.. and the red interior lighting is nice.

The Mamba..
Well its like a exotic sports car. Fun to look at....Not so practical to actually daily. Much past that I don't know its not something I would fly. I did for a moment but I was underwhelmed compared to the venerable Fer-de-lance.

Hmmm.... I didn't really like the Mamba until I saw it in black. Looks like an old Caddy or something.

Nice

I saw the Mamba and thought I better get one. While it was fun, I really really like SLF/NPC pilot arrangement more so traded in the Mamba for a Krait MKII. Been having a lot of fun with it at those defend-the-structure/megaship scenarios. :) Thanks FD for another ship with a fighter bay.

I love the Mamba.Engineer it to do over 600ms,put efficient huge PA on it with Frags and boost in ,shoot and boost out....

The Phantom makes a great strait upgrade to the Asp Explorer (when fitted with downsized modules). I would not replace a Krait MkII with one however as they are different ships. But there is defo a justification for the Phantom, even if you don't see it.

The mistake OP is making is with their presumption that the only purpose for a ship is combat. The Phantom, for example, makes for an excellent exploration vessel. The view does let it down a little though.

I just finished the first 8k LY exploration in the Phantom. It's an awesome explorer.

The Mamba is not so stellar, not sure what to do with it yet.

For me the plus point of the Mamba is that all the guns are on one side of the ship makes concentrating fire much simpler.

When you consider the lack of choice for ships within 20-50mil credits this time last year, it's nice to see some additional ships filling this gap. Maybe the new ships aren't what everyone is looking for, but at least there's an alternative to a Python for some people to aim for now.

The mamba simply is great,
when we finally get limpet controller bays
that ship will be even better!

Finally a ship with character and quirks!

I've just finished building a Clipper for core mining and fully equipped it's as fast as the pre-nerf Mamba I built in beta. The Mamba really needs to be a lot faster than it's ever likely to be if it's to stand any chance of being anything other than a fake Ferrari.

I put a huge pulse on my mamba with 2 large MC and it melted down. I'm pretty disappointed with the heat capacity of it. I'm thinking it needs an all kinetic load or something. Anyone else experience this?

Happy New Year.

A Mamba with huge beams, large reverb Cascade torpedo launchers and dumbfire with penetrating munitions is a lot of fun...until the ammo runs out.

Phantom is my current bubble multirole. It's fun to fly. It has more
/larger internals than AspE, which I prefer. Don't need the SLF and prefer the longer jump range compared to MK2

Engineered?
Might be related to weapons creating excess heat when the WEP cap isn't full,
didn't have the prob with huge burst lasers, but there was a bug with pulses
a while back, might that be resurrected?
