Why is it that when you take on a mission to kill pirates just because someone offers you a new contract that you loose all the progress you have already made in the mission, Mission kill 6 pirates ok so I've killed 5 one more to go . get offered alternate contract to kill authority vessel the 5 kills already done are gone so have to kill another 6 to complete mission. if i don't want to take the alternate mission, seems crazy to me ,

It's a bug. Frontier really should know about it already, but ticket it anyway to put a bit more pressure on. It's taking them a long time to fix for such a significant and annoying bug...

Seems like a bug to me. You should probably submit a ticket. The alternative mission is optional and should not negate any progress. You should even be able to do both and at the end, choose which of the two to turn in.

It's a known issue and from what I've read it's been known about since beta. Sorry if that doesn't fill you with confidence.

As a workaround what I've been doing is flying around USS until I get offered the alternative mission then I start the actual mission.

To be fair most of the times i get the alternate mission in my first USS - sounds like an irritating bug to me...
