Newcomer / Intro I don't see other players

I've been playing on open play ever since I got the game 4 days ago, and I haven't seemed to find many other players, most times none at all. Are all other ships I see flying in and out of starports other players or are the ones that say things like "system defence force" just NPCs. (Xbox)

They are probably NPCs. Players will appear on the radar with a hole in the middle of their square dot, NPCs are solid square dot.

The thing is even in open you can not see a soul for weeks on end, it also has a lot to do with the whole p2p instance thing, which I wont even try and explain an I know little about the whys and why nots of it all, I think it has a lot to do with where you are in the world, the time your playing, and other such stuff.

If you really want to see people head to one of the CG systems, bound to bump into someone who might well say hi before sending you to the rebuy screen ;) (open isnt the bloodbath some make out, not that I play in it)

With weapons deployed players are triangles with holes in the middle.
If the hollow triangle starts to get close it's time to leave.

All players will have a CMDR prefix to their names.
Just to confuse you even further some NPC's are called Commander something. But that's just a name - look for the 4 letter prefix.
e.g. CMDR Maenden

Lots of players will send you a o7 salute as they zoom past.
Some will just ignore you - or they haven't quite worked out how to use the Comms panel.

How many people you see will depend where you are. Space is a big place - but some areas are more populated than others.

If you want to interact with other people you might want to join a group, then you can agree to meet together.

As mentioned above, if you fly out to Community Goals, you will find plenty of other players but be warned some are hostile. Remember that this game is massive, and unless you're somewhere that has some kind of significance, you'll be alone.

In addition to keeping an eye on your radar another neat trick to see if there are players near you is cntrl + B. When you hit this you'll see your send/receive data on the bottom left. If you're receiving over 1000b/s, then there is a player(s) in your instance.

This is pretty common OP, I think I played the game in Open for about 3 weeks before I saw another player. It's the main reason some of the community wants Solo/PG revisited, the game is a straight up ghost town majority of the time.

If you want some player interaction, head to a Community Goal, you'll find plenty of players there (depending on location/time of day). Once you start doing engineering, you'll also run into a lot more players around engineer outposts. If you're a combat pilot, Kremainn is a common hangout for bounty hunters (close to start, high security, good selection of RES Nodes, station has lots of modules). I was there about a week ago and saw half a dozen hollow triangles in the station each docking.

Target any ship and if the name starts with CMDR that is a live player. Note some are nice while others are sadistic killers wanting to add your kill to their gaming experiences. They will be there in the populated areas as well as the Engineering planets. Leave these areas to less populated systems and Open mode is usually friendly. Better to go Solo mode when a player doesn't want to risk being killed on a high paying mission or a long trip to an engineer. PvP'ers with advanced weaponry will take you out in seconds. Someday you may have a ship capable of taking on PvP but that is a totally different play style.

What would be amusing to me would be if a group of players got together and decided to target griefers/pk'ers/sadistic scum and blow them into satans bowels. Even better if they did so enough times so they could no longer affiord the rebuy...

Wait... Now *I* sound sadistic...

I prefer group to solo if I'm doing something critical that would really end badly if I were killed by a player. Rarely use it now though as my bank balance is "sufficient" for death to be an annoyance rather than a big problem and testing my escape skills from killer players can also be fun.

I could be game for that. Obviously, as the n00b, I'd probably have to be the bait... wait... That's not sounding so great now

Most people avoid the starter systems once they have got enough cash to leave them behind. The only people you are likely to see there are new players finding their feet or seal clubbers in pimped rides who just want to watch folk burn. Best advice, is make some quick cash, upgrade your ship or buy a better one and get the hell out of Dodge, once you get away from there, you will start to meet other players more frequently. As someone said above, maybe join a group, but also bear in mind that systems outnumber players by a massive factor, so unless you are in a heavily populated centre piece of the bubble, real CMDRs may be few and far between. Also, when you do meet a CMDR, it pays to drop off an "o7" just in case, but if you see a hollow triangle coming up behind you, get ready to high wake out :D

We may not see each other much due to my odd gaming hours, but you're welcome to add me, as I am also playing on Xbox. GT is my username. If we are on together, we can play some or chat.
