I don't understand how the first mapped tag works

From all the videos and everything I've read I thought it was going to work like this:

You find a planet that hasn't been mapped (as evidenced by the "first mapped by [name]" tag not being there on the system map).
You go there and use the DSS to map it.
You go back to a station and sell your exploration data.
And I'm guessing you can only map landable planets, or at least I haven't tested any other types.

I was in the process of doing RAM Tah's Guardian mission and found a whole system with lots of planets that had been discovered but not mapped. So I went ahead and mapped them. I sold all the data later, but got little money (for how many systems I had been in) and no first mapped notification.

So how does it work?!

You have the right of it, but there are some high-population systems in the bubble that cannot be mapped because... They're already fully known. Probably you were trying to map one of those.

Sol, Alioth and Achenar are the most obivous three 'Well known systems - not mappable'.

Oh, and you can map planets you can't land on, anything but stellars, really.

edit: Waaaait a minute, 'while doing Ram Tah's mission'? You were out of the bubble? Then it's probably a bug, can you double-check that system in the galmap see if the planets are now mapped? Maybe someone beat you to the punch...

The bug might be no First Mapped notification when selling data, though I am not sure that one is actually supposed to pop up there. If you go and look at the system map again now that you have sold your data, the First Mapped tags should be there, unless...

Someone else turned in their data first.

I noticed same thing, no notification that I got first mapped when I sold. But i had bookmarked the system, so looked at it in galaxy map and sure enough it had labeled first mapped w my name. So go check, maybe you did get the label, and it just doesn’t announce it when you turn in the data!

Ok, maybe it was that. I'll try to go find the system(s) I mapped again. I haven't bookmarked them so it might prove difficult.

And yeah, I wasn't trying to map anything in the bubble.

We'll see how it goes, thank you guys!

I was a bit confused by this too, so did a mini-investigation and found that Universal Cartographic's simply doesn't tell you that you got 'First Mapped' when you sell the data.
If you go back to the system where you did some first mapping (bookmark it or some such whilst your there first time), you'll find your name tagged on your mapped planets =o)

I've been getting a notification when I map an object, the skybox says First discovery/Mapping with a stipend. You might have to scroll down the skybox to get to the mapping section cause its at the bottom. The first part of the skybox is the list of scanned objects for the system, then the mapping follows below. Of course, if an object has been mapped before you, you do not get a bonus for mapping it or the tag.

What I have not determined yet is the timing of the mapping and I think it is the same as the Codex entries which happens in real time except that your name does not get associated as the first mapper until the data is sold. So I'm thinking that the first to map an object gets the bonus and tag regardless of when he sells the data, even if someone comes behind him and maps and sells before him. I haven't tested it out so can't say affirmatively that this is how it works.

That can't be right because otherwise you could go around and map things for 2 years and no one else would be able to get the first mapped tag for it in the meantime because they sold their data first.

I'm 99% certain it works the same way as first discovered, i.e first to sell the data.

Your first point about needing to scroll down to see the mapping is quite probably the answer to the OP. I've sold a lot of data in the last few days and the skyboxes are buggy and not always updating properly on selling multiple pages, but they are split into different sections as you say. Top to bottom it's:

Discovered and Mapped
Discovered
Mapped
Bonus (? whatever this actually is)

Mapping is done by the surface scan minigame. It works with every body (that is not a brown dwarf, even rings for hotspots) and is done at 3M/s near the body when it is in target. It is even more work than the old lazy nearby scan, but rewards a second name now. And no, you can even map planets in prescouted systems.

The bug was that you also got first discoveries at the beginning. That was fixed.

Well, on my way to colonia I did some "first discovered" / "first mapped" / "first footfall" and the only thing I can see where my name is shown in the map is "first footfall"

Is that a new odysee bug or do I something wrong?

First footfall is instant. First Discovered and first mapped tags have always happened when you sell the data.

I sold my data,
but I found out a minute ago due to a UI-bug with odyssey I didn't sold all my data because after selling each page of data you have to leave universal catagraphics and reenter to sell the next page of data

When you sell a page there's a delay until the next page is shown. Give it around ten seconds and a fresh page should appear.

The other thing which I do is to press the "previous page" button in the selling interface to force it to refresh, that always works.
if I do this on fleet carriers I always get a "transaction canceled" error. Can't try this on stations because Im somewhere between sagitarius and beagle point.
I think there are a few UI-bugs left...
