Engineers I don't understand what the engineers are offering me!

OK I'm an old postman and I don't have a clue what I am looking at with all those stats n stuff.

I have been out collecting stuff, now I have a stock of said stuff to activate the upgrades I have NO IDEA what the engineer is offering to do to my parts!

I mean when I look at upgrading my shield its got these sliders, power draw, optimal hull mass, mass, integrity and optimal strength. I DON'T CARE ABOUT ALL THAT I JUST NEED TO KNOW IF MY SHIELDS WILL BE STRONGER!!!!!

Is there a chart somewhere that dumb's it down for duffers?

If you use a mod that strengthens shields, the shields will get stronger than stock ones from outfitting. For that increased strength the module might have a bit more weight, draw some more power, and so on, what the text at the sliders says.

There is no chart because 4-5 parameters are variable in the range the sliders show, so every outcome will be unique, there won't be two the same strengthened shields.

With bad luck your modified shield e.g. could draw too much power for you power plant, but it will be stronger nevertheless. In such cases you could try again.

Rolling again and again for levels 1-3 isn't worth it, just use what you get because it will be better than a stock module.

Ahh I see, so the item will be upgraded by whatever the engineer says but I have to eat the random disadvantages that are listed with those sliders.

Thanks that makes some sense now.

How many attempts do I have to make for the engineer to allow me to upgrade to the next level?

Not sure how many upgrades gets you to the next level, but there are other easier ways to increase your rep with the engineer:
Yes, you can :

If there is UC at the engineer base => exploration data (5M should take you well into rank 4)
If there is a Market at the base => sell commodities for profit (rep increase is based on net profit, so rares and mining work well here) (3M for rank 3)
If there are Contacts at the base => turn in bounties / combat bonds (seems that only some specific bounties/bonds juridiction work)

Because having them roll weapons with reduced rate of fire, reduced damage, reduced accuracy, increased heat load, increased power load, and increased capacitor draw is an improvement apparently...

Can that actually happen? I think that every blueprint has at least one forced improvement area, no?

So I did a couple of modification rolls and it looks SILLY.

A couple of sliders ping pong from 1 side to the other. I feel like I've given the engineer my stuff and she's flicked the white ball around the rim and I'm just waiting to see if it lands in red or black!

It feels like a dam slot machine lol pretty pants if you ask me.

Annnddd I have no idea AGAIN what those sliders represent in the way of making my stuff better.

I pointed this out in beta - many of the stars are completely non-comprehensible for players. They need an area with things like:

  • Speed / Boost speed
  • Jump range
  • Shield Strength
  • Hull Strength

available somewhere, like bottom right corner, regardless of what you're modding. For example modding a weapon that increases its weight will decrease speed and jump range. Modding a shield booster or shield will affect shield strength etc. In general we need human readable _results_ of the modding easily available _before_ applying a change. Engines are especially odd in that the multiplier is increased but the optimal weight is decreased. What does that mean for my ship? I have absolutely no clue.

Also some things are outright deceiving. For example on weapons we have:
  • Damage
  • Firing rate
  • Damage per second
As anyone can figure out DPS is calculated from damage and firing rate. That's also how it works when modding, yet it's shown as a separate "roll" if you wish. This is also something that should be in the "summary of changes" so it's clear it's not rolled separately in some weird kind of way.

On shields the stat for it's strength can be seen only in outfitting? My class 7 corvette shields currently show 1515.1 (level 3 reinforced) when I go to outfitting, but I also have 4 class A boosters enabled is the overall strength shown anywhere?

Of course not, but certain people like to sound overly dramatic as if it is all doom and gloom. I honestly don't think they actually understand the non-sense they are spouting, but they like to look intelligent, but are obviously anything but. The lower tiers are usually 1 or 2 positives and 1 or 2 negatives. You take something positive for something negative. As you move up the tiers the positive side effects get stronger and the negatives get lower. Some of the higher tier stuff basically has only positives with some really minor negatives. Like a shield booster that gives +200% shield with a 10% increase in weight. Since shield boosters weight nothing, 10% increase won't kill you.

So I highly suggest you simply ignore the people spouting nonsense.

The value shown in outfitting is the total strength. Doesn't help with modding but it's a start.

So that includes shield boosters regardless of whether they are disabled or not, because I've tried turning some of them off to see if that figure changes and it doesn't?

Could be 3 or it could be 1 to go from level 1 to level 2. I've experienced both cases so far. It seems to vary based on what you upgrade.

the same fell i got when i met my first engineers. plus i play DE client many things are explained with missing strings (ie {placeholder_trivia_type})
i would also suggest that someone read a 2nd time the translation.
