I feel like I have hit a trade profit wall.

So I am near sol, in my hauler, and I am making about 22,000cr for every return jump. I buy some gold, take it next door, then take some cheaper goods back to where I got the gold from. But if I want to get into something like a type 6 transporter then 22k credits every 10 mins or so is going to take something like 10 hours of non stop trading. There must be a way to increase the amount of credits I can get, my limit atm is a cargo capacity of 14.

I am sure I managed to make more last time I played back in early beta, I just can't remember how.

By analyzing the Galaxy Map and having a healthy dose of luck, I found a system with two stations 0.59ls apart, with 1400profit/unit one way and 1100profit/unit the other. Roundtrip is 7 minutes. Went from Sidey to Type-6 in half a day. Will have Asp before the day is over. It's all about exploring to find those nuggets.

I would add that keeping an eye on the bulletin board is probably a good plan, cargo runs can pay out some good money.
I also suggest jumping to the Cobra when you can afford it, faster and better capacity than the hauler.

First, you can boost your cargo space by swaping your basic discovery scanner for another 4t cargo hold. Unless you want to explore in the hauler...

Second, next ship you want is cobra, which can get up to 44t cargo space. I bought my for 379k.

No, Cobra has 60t max. Always ditch that shield... paying for landing bumps is less cost than the extra profit from that cargo hold :)

My hauler has 14t capacity with everything including the shields replaced with cargo bays. And you serious? The cobra gets 44t capacity? I just found my new ship, thank you.

If I remember correctly, the Hauler can have 22t cargo max :
2 x Class 3, 8t (default : 2 x 4t)
1 x Class 2, 4t (default : shield generator)
1 x Class 1, 2t (default : basic discovery scanner)

Yes, you're missing the link . Hauler->Cobra(220K)->T6. You can pick resource delivery missions and get like 200k in 10 mins if you're lucky.

You need to find better cargo modules. Normal hauler with shields is able to carry 18 tons. Pay attention to module size, you can mount 8t cargo holds on hauler. And DONT drop shields, every interdiction will give you a heart attack...

I've been trying to do just this but having a hard time! Am I on the right track by looking for a high tech / developed economy and a extraction/refinery type fairly close to one another?

But what if you get attacked?

RUN! As a trader, I always sell my guns and shield, so can't get any stupid ideas like trying to fight. Oh, and I buy a VERY BIG thruster plus Class A power distribution. Boosting every two seconds is good. And of course, be good at the interdiction mini-game. And why are you trading in systems where you get attacked anyway? And so on and so forth.

I always pick high-tech as starting points, in part because they will have best source of new ships for progression, and because they sell the most expensive stuff (best profit margins follow). In my current particular case I lucked out, because the high-tech system I'm in has two stations close to each other with 1000+ profits each way. Currently making 2M/hour in a Type-6.

So are you guys who are running shieldless, flying in Solo mode? There are some fairly brainless real people in open play who are taking out empty sidewinders in the system where I spawned.
